With polling day approaching, the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) and the Panvel Municipal Corporation (PMC) have declared full preparedness for the civic elections scheduled on January 15, putting in place extensive administrative, security, and technological measures to ensure free, fair, and peaceful voting.
In Navi Mumbai, Municipal Commissioner and Chief Election Officer Kailas Shinde said all election-related arrangements are in place across the city’s 28 wards, where polling will be conducted under the multi-member panel system. Wards 1 to 27 will elect four corporators each, while Ward 28 will elect three members.
The city has an electorate of 9,48,460 voters, comprising 5,16,267 men, 4,32,040 women, and 153 voters from other categories. Polling will be held at 1148 polling stations spread across 185 locations, managed through eight administrative divisions. To ensure voter convenience, wheelchair access has been provided at all polling stations for senior citizens and persons with disabilities, along with volunteers to assist voters.
A total of 6890 trained election staff, including presiding officers, polling officers, and support personnel, will be deployed on duty. More than 1400 Control Units and 3700 Ballot Units of electronic voting machines have been tested, sealed, and secured in strong rooms under police guard. All polling stations will be monitored through CCTV surveillance and live webcasting. Each administrative division will also feature a women-managed Sakhi (Pink Booth) and an eco-friendly Green Booth.
In Panvel, the municipal administration has also finalised comprehensive arrangements across 656 polling booth centres. The city has 5,54,578 registered voters, including 2,94,821 men, 2,59,685 women, and 72 transgender voters. Notably, the administration has identified no sensitive polling stations, citing extensive preventive planning ahead of polling day.
For the PMC elections, 1000 Control Units and 2,008 Ballot Units have been deployed after thorough inspection and sealing. A total of 4,168 officers and staff have been appointed for poll duty. Security arrangements in Panvel include 126 senior police officers, supported by 1315 police personnel and 600 Home Guards, with surveillance and rapid-response teams on standby throughout the day. Model Code of Conduct squads and flying squads have been directed to remain vigilant.
Polling in both Navi Mumbai and Panvel will be held from 7.30 am to 5.30 pm. Civic chiefs have appealed to residents to vote in large numbers, assuring that all measures are in place to ensure a transparent, secure, and voter-friendly election.
