A new service Maharashtra’s public transport system is set to begin with the launch of the ‘Rajmata Jijau’ bus service. The service will be inaugurated on March 24 at the Vidhan Bhavan premises by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, officials said on Monday.
Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and Sunetra Pawar will also be present at the event, along with other senior leaders, Maharashtra Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik said.
According to the minister, around 3,000 modern ‘Rajmata Jijau’ buses will soon be added to the fleet of Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation. This move is expected to strengthen the state’s public transport system and improve passenger services.
He said the new buses represent a blend of tradition and progress, bringing modern technology into a system that serves millions daily.
Honouring Rajmata Jijau
An official statement said that the buses have been named after Rajmata Jijau, as a tribute to her role in shaping the values of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. Officials said the name reflects respect for Maharashtra’s rich history and cultural heritage.
The ST corporation has earlier introduced services with historic names such as Shivneri, Shivshahi, Shivai, Yashwanti and Hirkani.

The ‘Rajmata Jijau’ buses are equipped with several modern features to improve comfort and safety-

- Higher capacity compared to existing buses
- CCTV cameras for security
- GPS tracking system
- Panic button for emergencies
- Public announcement system
- Electronic route display boards
These features aim to provide a safer, smarter and more comfortable travel experience, officials said.
Focus on busy routes
The new buses will mainly operate as shuttle services between two major cities on high-traffic routes. This is expected to reduce travel time for passengers and ease pressure on existing transport services, the statement said.
The first batch of 50 buses will be deployed in Nagpur, where the service will begin.
