In a move to ease work pressure on the state police force and strengthen law enforcement, the Maharashtra government has approved recruitment of 15,000 new constables. The approval was given a go ahead on Tuesday in the cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis.

According to the statement issued by the chief minister’s office (CMO), the recruitment will include 10,908 regular police constables, 234 police constables (drivers), 25 police constables (for police band) and 2393 armed police constables. Besides, these 554 prison constables will be recruited and all the enrolment process will be done at respective districts.

“OMR [Optical mark recognition] based written examination will be conducted for the recruitment,” the statement added. Last year, the Maharashtra police, for its recruitment drive to fill 17,471 constabulary posts — constables, drivers, band men, SRPF personnel and jail staff — had received 17.76 lakh applications.

Also, as a one time special concession to those who have crossed the prescribed age limit (18-28 years) in 2022 and 2023, too will be allowed to apply. The release further mentioned that the additional director general (ADG) of police (training) has been authorised to oversee application scrutiny, physical tests and written exams.

“Police constables play an important role in maintaining law and order. This recruitment will help reduce the workload on the department,” Fadnavis mentioned. Both the Supreme Court and the High Court, along with the several members of the Legislative Assembly cutting across party lines, have repeatedly suggested expediting the process of recruitment of police constables in Maharashtra.
