Maharashtra Health Minister Prakash Abitkar on Wednesday said that the state government, in collaboration with the public health department and Tata Memorial Hospital, is committed to achieving the goal of a “cancer-free Maharashtra”.

The minister visited Tata Memorial Hospital in Parel, Mumbai, where he reviewed various departments and sought details on modern cancer treatment methods. Tata Memorial Centre’s All-India Director Dr Sudeep Gupta, Hospital Director Dr CS Pramesh, Deputy Directors Shrikande and Siddhnath Laskar, and Hospital Superintendent Dr Vineet Samant were present for the event.

Abitkar noted that cancer cases have risen sharply in recent years and said the state has been conducting screening and treatment camps across Maharashtra. He added that Tata Memorial’s work in cancer care has been significant and that the joint efforts of both institutions reflect the government’s determination to eliminate cancer from the state.

The minister also said that the state has increased package rates under the Mahatma Phule Jan Arogya Yojana and added several new diseases to the scheme, which will benefit cancer patients as well.

Private hospitals empanelled under the scheme must ensure post-treatment services for cancer patients, he said.

Under the National Health Mission and with technical support from Tata Cancer Care Hospitals, 26 day-care centres will be set up across district-level locations in the state. This will help extend cancer treatment services to patients in rural areas, he informed.

The minister said discussions during his visit also focused on technical support and training for these day-care centres. He urged hospitals empanelled under the Mahatma Phule Jan Arogya Yojana to share any suggestions for improving service delivery with the Health Department’s study group.
