Several parts of Maharashtra are likely to witness stormy weather accompanied by rain and thunderstorms from March 17 to March 20, as per the weather forecasting agencies.
Cautioning about the unexpected weather conditions, authorities have asserted that they may turn cloudy during the afternoon hours in many districts, increasing the likelihood of rain, lightning, and gusty winds.
Various parts of Maharashtra to be affected
The weather pattern is expected to affect regions of the state, including Vidarbha, Marathwada, Khandesh, and parts of Central Maharashtra. As per the officials, overcast skies may lead to intermittent rainfall and thunderstorms in these regions.
Experts also cautioned that we cannot rule out the possibility of lightning strikes and strong winds during this period.
Weather conditions across Maharashtra are likely to intensify on March 18.
Officials further stressed that the intensity of the weather activity is likely to increase between March 18 and March 20, with some areas potentially experiencing heavier rainfall and isolated hailstorms.
Maharashtra government issues advisory for farmers
Amid the alarming weather conditions, the Maharashtra State Agriculture Department on Friday also issued a critical advisory for farmers and citizens.
The department issued an advisory to prevent weather damage to crops after a preliminary weather forecast predicted turbulent conditions across various regions of the state.
In view of the forecast, the agriculture department has urged farmers to remain vigilant and keep track of updated weather bulletins over the coming days. As the harvesting of rabi crops is currently underway across many parts of the state, farmers have been advised to take precautionary measures to safeguard their produce.
The advisory highlighted, “These areas may witness thunderstorms, lightning strikes, and high-velocity winds. " There is also a distinct possibility of hailstorms in certain pockets. Current data suggests that the intensity of these weather events is likely to peak between March 18 and March 20.”
The department emphasised that timely precautions can help minimise crop losses and ensure that the ongoing harvest season is not adversely affected by the expected weather conditions.
State Agriculture Department asks farmers to take precautionary measures
With the Rabi harvest currently in full swing, the Agriculture Department has also urged the farming community to take immediate precautionary measures, including crop protection, planning, and safety, to mitigate potential losses.
