The Railway Protection Force has arrested a man for allegedly stealing gold and silver jewellery worth Rs 56.68 lakh from a passenger on a moving train, an official said on Saturday, reported news agency PTI.
Accused Radhe Gajju Bisone allegedly stole a bag containing valuables belonging to Pradeepkumar Dharmpal Singh, who was travelling on the Mumbai-Howrah Mail train, near Nashik on Friday, reported PTI.
Acting on Singh's complaint, RPF launched a search and zeroed in on Bisone when the train was on its way to Manmad, reported PTI.
The RPF team checked Bisone's belongings and found Singh's bag containing over 50 tolas of gold and silver, worth Rs 56.68 lakh, the official said.
ATM unit with Rs 20 lakh cash stolen
In another case, unidentified persons stole an Automated Teller Machine (ATM) unit containing Rs 20.26 lakh cash in Nashik Road area in the wee hours on Saturday, police said, reported PTI.
At least four unidentified persons with their faces covered with clothes broke into the SBI ATM kiosk in the Jail Road area near Currency Note Press (CNP). They blackened the CCTV camera with black colour, cut the power supply to the alarm, and decamped with the ATM in a four-wheeler vehicle, reported PTI.
Police have registered a case and are investigating, an official said.
DRI seizes gold worth Rs 12.58 crore at Mumbai airport; 13 held
Meanwhile, the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence has seized gold worth Rs 12.58 crore, brought in by carriers who had concealed it inside their bodies, at Mumbai airport, and arrested 13 persons, including airport staffers, officials said on Saturday, reported PTI.
Under 'Operation Golden Sweep', DRI's Mumbai zonal unit exposed the gold smuggling syndicate, an official said.
During the operation, DRI arrested two Bangladeshi nationals, six Sri Lankan citizens, two staffers of a meet-and-greet service, two handlers and the mastermind, he said, reported PTI.
A total of 10.5 kg of gold, worth about Rs 12.58 crore, was seized from them.
The gold syndicate used transit passengers from Dubai to Singapore, Bangkok, and Dhaka via Mumbai to act as carriers, who concealed the yellow metal in egg-shaped wax capsules inside their bodies, he said, reported PTI.
Upon arrival in Mumbai, these transit passengers handed over the smuggled gold to complicit airport employees within the international departure area, he said. The staffers would then take the gold out of the airport premises and deliver it to outsiders, the official said, reported PTI.
The syndicate, operated by masterminds based in Mumbai and Dubai, employed transit passengers, airport staff, handlers and several layers of receivers, the official added.
