Shiv Sena is pulling out all the stops this assembly election, be it with or without alliance partner BJP. The Sena will be spending big bucks to book the MMRDA ground in Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC) for party chief Uddhav Thackeray’s rally slated for October 12.

Narendra Modi, in the run-up to the Lok Sabha elections, had also convened a rally at the MMRDA grounds where Uddhav Thackeray will now conduct his rally for the state assembly elections. File pic

According to an MMRDA official, the agency has received a booking from Sena leader Anil Parab, reserving 50,000 square metres of the mammoth ground in E block, BKC, for October 11, 12, and 13. The party has already submitted its application and is expected to complete payment formalities within the next couple of days. October 13 is the last permissible day for campaigning for the assembly elections, before the state goes to polls on October 15.

An MMRDA official, requesting anonymity, said, “We have received an application from Shiv Sena’s Anil Parab, who want to book the ground for the election rally from October 11-13. Earlier they wanted 1 lakh square metres, but will now make a fresh application for booking 50 thousand square metres of space. The booking formalities and the payment is expected to be done within the next two to three days.”

While the rally will take place on October 12, party workers will put up the pandal on October 11 and dismantle the entire setup on October 13. Separate rents are being charged for use on each day (See box). The Sena will be expected to pay a total of Rs 14,47,500 for the three days, and an additional security deposit of Rs 10,85,625 (75 per cent of the rent).

The MMRDA has laid down 31 terms and conditions while agreeing to give the land on rent, a breach of which means confiscation of the entire security deposit amount. So far, informed the MMRDA, only the Sena has approached it for renting grounds for a rally. This is same ground on which PM Narendra Modi, then BJP’s prime ministerial candidate, had held his rally in the run-up to the Lok Sabha elections.
