Mumbai: Two storm water pumping stations to be inaugurated on Wednesday

In what will be a relief for residents of Dadar, Elphinstone Road, Parel and Naigaon area, the Rs 116 crore Love Grove pumping station and Rs 112 crore Cleveland Bunder pumping station, which will pump out rainwater during high tide and heavy rainfall, are set to be inaugurated by Shiv Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray and other leaders on Wednesday.

The two pumping stations were originally part of a BMC plan to install nine pumping stations in different parts of the city to pump out rainwater. However, only two were constructed and have been operational so far. These are the Irla and Haji Ali pumping stations. The Love Grove and Cleveland Bunder storm water pumping stations were supposed to be operational from October 2013 and the concerned contractors have been fined heavily for the delay.

Both the stations are ready now and their trial run was conducted last week. Love Grove, with 10 pumps, was successfully tested on May 25 and Cleveland, with 7 pumps, was tested on May 31. They have already been pressed into operation before a formal inauguration is done on Wednesday.

“Both the pumps have a capacity to drain over 6000 litres each of water per second. While the catchment area of Love Grove is Chinchpokli, Saat Rasta, Byculla, J.J. Road, Currey Road and Worli and Cleveland Bunder catchment area is Dadar, Lower Parel and Elphinstone. They have already become operational, but a formal inauguration will be done on Wednesday,” informed Laxman Vhatkar, director, Engineering Services and Projects of the BMC.
