On Friday at 3:29 PM, the Mumbai Fire Brigade (MFB) received a report of a fire involving a CNG-powered BEST bus in Vikhroli East.
The bus, operating on Route No. 397 (registration number MH-03 EG-1654, sequence number 33, bus number 7039) under SMTATPL (Maruti Travels), was travelling from Vikhroli Station towards Kannamwar Nagar. The incident occurred near Kannamwar Nagar No 2, in front of Pragati Vidyalaya and opposite Building No 178.
According to reports, the wiring inside the driver’s cabin caught fire, which quickly filled the cabin with smoke. Displaying presence of mind, the driver (ID No 022246) and the conductor (ID No 109143) immediately used the onboard fire extinguisher to control the flames. The BEST staff swiftly evacuated all passengers before the arrival of the fire brigade, ensuring that there are no injuries.
The MFB team arrived on the scene and fully extinguished the fire by 3.44 pm. The prompt response from both the bus crew and authorities prevented the incident from escalating further.
While the exact cause of the wiring fault is yet to be officially confirmed, the episode underscores the importance of quick action, preparedness, and proper safety equipment in public transport.
