Birthday turns violent

The accused — Ayaz Malik, Ayan Malik, Salman Chaudhary, Ajjubaila Khan and Sarif Shaikh — grew up with the victim, Abdul Khan, in the same locality, police said. They reached his residence around midnight with a cake. Moments after stepping out of the building post-celebration, a quarrel broke out. Police said what the youths described as “masti masti mein” — friendly banter — quickly escalated into a brutal assault.

Beaten and set on fire

According to the police, the attack began around 12.10 am when the group allegedly dragged Khan out of his home, hit him with stones and wooden sticks, and set his clothes on fire using a lighter. Two of the accused allegedly ignited his clothes while the others continued beating him.As the flames spread across his chest, arms and face, Khan screamed for help and ran towards a nearby water tap. Neighbours rushed him to Rajawadi Hospital, where he is undergoing treatment for serious burn injuries.

Case registered

An attempt-to-murder case has been registered under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. All five accused have been arrested and remanded to police custody. Further investigation is underway.
