As the CoWIN app starts to function better, the BMC on Wednesday set up another vaccination centre at SevenHills Hospital for the inoculation drive of the health workers, taking the total number of centres in the city to 11, including one centre run by the state government at JJ hospital.
The BMC has decided to increase the number of centres considering the large turnout for the drive and also to reduce travel time for health workers. It will start another centre on Friday at the NESCO grounds where a jumbo COVID facility has been set up.
The civic body also increased the number of vaccination booths at each centre and inoculated over 5,000 health workers on Wednesday. It had expected a turnout of over 7,700, though that did not happen.
The 11 centres currently have 77 active booths. These will be increased on Thursday and Friday, officials said.
Meanwhile, the issues with the CoWIN app are also slowly getting fixed and the system has started to take up the load of registered health workers’ information. This is mainly why the civic body wants to increase its inoculation capacity in phases.
Suresh Kakani, additional municipal commissioner, said, “Considering that the travel time for health workers reduces if we give them more options, we have decided to increase the number of centres. We won’t start everything at once. We want to ensure that the system does not crash again. We will do this in phases and gradually, as the turnout increases, we will be ready with more centres.”
Two peripheral hospitals — Ambedkar hospital at Kandivli and Rajawadi hospital at Ghatkopar had one of the highest turnouts of 829 and 783 people respectively. There were eight cases of adverse effects reported and the recipients were kept under observation for 30 minutes and allowed to go.
