In order to maintain oxygen supply to the various hospitals treating COVID-19 patients in the city and ensure they don’t fall short, the BMC has appointed six coordinating officers. Their primary job will be to coordinate between oxygen suppliers, assistant commissioners of the 24 civic wards and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) so that oxygen reaches patients in time.
According to the BMC, of the 24 wards in the city, one coordinating officer will be in charge of four. They will have to ensure that oxygen is supplied in a timely manner by being in touch with all the three stakeholders.
In particular, they will have to coordinate between them so that all the 64 nursing homes treating COVID-19 patients in the city do not face any problems.
In a review meeting held on Thursday between the Environment, Tourism and Protocol and Mumbai Suburban District Guardian Minister Aaditya Thackeray, BMC Commissioner, Iqbal Singh Chahal, FDA Commissioner Abhimanyu Kale and other officers, the availability and status of oxygen supply in the city were discussed.
Civic sources said that the need for oxygen was increasing and hence it was important to keep the supply system running. Currently, 235 metric tonnes of oxygen is being supplied to hospitals across Mumbai.
Kale expressed concern over the increasing demand for oxygen across the state and how it was putting a lot of stress on manufacturers, systems and supply vehicles. However, he said that the civic body’s demand was being positively considered and the government was working on getting oxygen from other states as well. He further said that more oxygen would be provided for the city’s reserves as well.
Chahal said at the meeting, “In order to maintain the existing oxygen supply and use it sparingly, and also to reduce the burden on FDA, six officers are being appointed by the corporation to coordinate supply of the gas in Mumbai.”
Even Aaditya said that all the agencies should maintain coordination and the government would provide the necessary cooperation.
