Mumbai: Calf stuck inside drain pulled out after 4-hour rescue operation

Gangu Shinde, the owner of the calf, said the chamber lid was loosely placed

A calf that fell into a drainage chamber near Kabutarkhana in Dadar West, at 6.30 am on Monday, was rescued safely after a four-hour-long operation.

The fire brigade, along with units of solid waste management, stormwater drainage and disaster management departments broke the chamber and dug a pit 5.5 feet deep. The team tied a rope around the animal and pulled it out safely. The calf was handed over to the owner after giving it basic first aid.

As per the officials, the calf fell into the drainage chamber in front of the Ram temple at Bhawani Shankar Road. The chamber was intact and open and its lid was found from a distance.

However, an official from the G north ward said, “When we asked the owner of the calf Gangu Shinde, she admitted that the cover was loosely placed and the calf might have pushed the lid off with its hooves.” BMC officials said the drainage lid was slightly open because of ongoing footpath work.
