The police have booked a Malad resident for throwing a pet cat from the 9th floor of a high-rise building, resulting in its death. While the owner of ‘Kalu’, who found her body in the society compound, initially thought she had been hit by a vehicle, CCTV cameras revealed that Kasam Sayyed, who was waiting for the elevator, spotted Kalu sitting on a shoe rack near the window, picked her up and hurled her out.

Sayyed allegedly also peeped out of the window to check if the cat had fallen to the ground. The cat’s owner, Gurjan Mohammad Umar Shamshi, 45, resides on the 21st floor of GrowMore Onyx Society, located in Malwani, Malad West. The accused, Kasam Sayyed, lives on the 9th floor of the same building. According to the police, the incident took place between 6.30 pm to 6.45 pm on June 5.

Speaking with mid-day, Shamshi said, “Kalu, who was 15 months old, was born in the society where we previously resided and we had been taking care of her since. Every evening, she would go outside and return after some time. On June 5, Kalu left home around 6.30 pm, and by 6.45 pm, we found her body lying on the ground floor. We tried to save her, but she died owing to multiple injuries.”

According to Shamshi, the family immediately requested the CCTV footage from the society, but failed to obtain it through the society manager. “On Tuesday, however, we gained access to the society’s CCTV cameras. After reviewing the footage from the compound area, we realised that Kalu wasn’t hit by a car. She had fallen from an upper floor. We then checked CCTV footage from all the floors and found our cat on the 9th floor,” he said.

“We lost our cat and Sayyed is responsible for her death. The police should arrest him. He brutally murdered our cat by throwing her from the 9th floor,” the Malwani resident added.

The CCTV footage from the 9th floor showed Sayyed come out of his apartment and press the elevator button. He then noticed Kalu standing on the shoe rack, picked her up, and threw her out of the window. Sayyed was also seen checking to ensure that the cat had to the ground.

A police officer said, “We have reviewed the CCTV footage and, based on the complaint, we have registered an FIR against Kasam Sayyed under Section 325 (mischief related to animals, particularly by killing, poisoning, maiming, or rendering them useless) of BNS and the Section 11(1)(I) (abandonment/cause pain to an animal) of the Animal Cruelty Act. We are investigating the matter.”

Meanwhile, Shamshi claimed that the FIR was registered after Vijay Rangare, president of NGO People for Animals, intervened in the matter and spoke with the Senior Police Inspector of Malvani police station. NGO members Pooja Yadav and Reshma Shelatkar helped file the complaint. mid-day tried to contact the accused, Kasam Sayyed, but he remained unavailable for comment.
