Got some extra time before your next client meeting or the next train home? Don’t waste time or money searching for a cafe to work from; soon, you’ll be able to work from the railway station! The Western Railway has awarded a contract for a co-working space — the first ever to be launched by the Indian Railways — at Mumbai Central station.
While there are co-working spaces at railway stations in Navi Mumbai, those are situated in buildings belonging to local development bodies like CIDCO. This is the first time that railways are allowing their own space to be used for such a purpose.
“This concept was conceived in line with the vision that stations should become city centres. Stations are at vantage locations and a digital lounge can promote the railways’ commitment to digital India, as well as provide a new offering in facilities at stations. This will provide world-class amenities for travelling professionals,” a WR spokesperson said.
“The contractor will develop the digital lounge over approximately 1500 sq ft. The lounge will be equipped with professional and social event spaces, conference/meeting room, high-speed Internet, charging points for laptops and mobiles, comfortable seating, printing and scanning facilities, light refreshments, and tea/coffee machines,” he added.
The lounge will be set up in the main hall of the concourse area and will be ready for public use in the next two to three months, he further added. These operators will offer the services on an hourly basis, allowing commuters to access the lounges for a reasonable fee.
