The city — sliced, diced and served with a dash of sauce

Mumbai Diary: Tuesday Dossier

Of support for India and other back stories
Nita Ambani was spotted in Rio with husband Mukesh and Sachin Tendulkar. Known to showcase the best of India while on a global platform, she was wearing a black hand embroidered Abu Jani Sandeep Khosla-marodi sari with gold and silver kasabh and resham thread work.

After the sari disaster that our helpless sportswomen were subjected to at the opening ceremony last weekend, this made for a redeeming picture. Still on Rio, we were surprised (in a good way) that commentators seem equipped with dope on Indian sportspersons. So, as rower Dattu Bhokanal came third in the heats, we heard the commentator remark that it was a commendable effort in a watersport, especially since India was coming out a drought.

Later, when the pint-sized Dipa Karmakar made an impressive showing, another commentator sounded visibly excited with the fact that she was the first ever gymnast to represent India, and that she hailed from ‘Ughertaalaa’ (Agartala). Pronounciation aside, the back stories impressed us. Now, for that elusive podium finish.

Last act at the Frog
Many hearts broke when news of one of the city’s most loved gig spaces moving out of its nine-year-old home in Lower Parel arrived. But blueFROG isn’t closing down, just moving to a new location. The brand will also focus on offering unique pop-ups, music festivals and experiential events.

The club will kick-start the final countdown with a month-long celebration titled, The Last Set. Following that artists, promoters, patrons and long-time clients and associates of the brand will come together to create multiple nights of music and F&B deals. The series will culminate in a final weekend that will present a multi-artiste, multi-genre day-long celebration at the venue from August 26 to 28.

Singing in ‘pub’ lic
Open mics are not just for Stand up comics and poets. Singer Vasuda Sharma (of Aasma fame, in pic) will host an Open Mic Night for singers too, at Vile Parle pub, ZooBar.

The pub will provide you with a guitar if needed. Stand Up Comedians and various artists can showcase their skills too. Signing up for a spot to perform requires advance reservation. Looks like talent hunts on television are inspiring city pubs too.

Jackie’s still got the groove

Even as his son, Tiger is making waves in Bollywood, the original cool dude, Jackie Shroff doesn’t seem to have lost any of his swagger.

Rice or berry?
Move over, brown and black rice. There’s a new breed of rice waiting to enter our culinary shores and we wouldn’t be surprised if our calorie-counting folk tuck into it soon.

Last weekend, we tried riceberry rice, currently hailed as a superfood in Thailand, at celebrated Thai chef Nooror Somany Steppe and daughter Sandra’s cooking session conducted at a spa retreat, two hours from Mumbai. Cooked with coconut milk, the sticky-sweetish purple-pigmented Thai rice is said to be a rich source of antioxidants, bran oil and fibre.

“It has a lot of health benefits, especially to fight diabetes and weight gain. I also cook it with coconut water since it helps fight Alzheimer’s and is a detox agent,” said the affable Steppe Senior, who, by the way, is a huge fan of Indian food, which she savours at Fort’s seafood landmark, Trishna.

Pauwa games
A Lower Parel café and bar has come up with a novel way for you to enjoy your drink.

‘Nothing like drinking out of your own pauwa?’ they ask us, and before we reply, they’ve introduced this cool option of downing your daaru whether whiskey, rum, vodka or brandy in a volume of 180 ml. Worth getting swiggy with this one, isn’t it?
