Up in arms for art’s sake

An artist can turn adversity into creativity, they say. Well, Raj Pathare aka Mooz just did that. An accident in a rickshaw at Ulwe last month left the graffiti artist with a torn ligament in the left shoulder. But since he could not step out of the house, Pathare turned up on the terrace of his apartment to create a new mural of the supervillain Galactus. “I could not go out to recce walls since I could not carry my bag. So, I decided to use the ignored wall on the terrace. I got it levelled. There was scaffolding available owing to ongoing work, so I used that. I was really dying to paint,” he revealed. The 15-feet-mural was completed over a span of two days. “I have always found the size of Galactus quite interesting in the comics, and with the movie coming out, it just felt right,” Pathare told this diarist.

The verdict is out

At a time when a reminder of our rights is necessary, former Chief Justice of India (CJI), DY Chandrachud’s new title, Why The Constitution Matters (Penguin Random House), feels more relevant. Having overseen judgements on pivotal cases, from individual rights to executive power, the former CJI will attempt to explain how Constitutional concepts affect the common man through the book. “It [the book] attempts to weave together my experiences of law, justice and judging in a career of nearly 25 years on the bench. It is an invocation to every citizen to engage in realising the true potential of the Constitution,” he said, about the book.

Nostalgia, served hot

Ever imagined going back in time to taste your favourite dish from the 1990s or early 2000s just once? Here’s a fun supper club you could be a part of that takes you down the memory lane. Method Bandra, on August 16, is hosting a community dinner party called Dine and Joy, Forward to the Past, a re-imagination of food, drinks and music that made the 1990s and 2000s memorable.

A six-course vegetarian meal specially curated by Bhavika Bhatia (left), independent chef and culinary designer, will kick off the first leg of Dine and Joy in Mumbai, whose roots lay at her Dubai family restaurant, Moreish, six years ago. “From school tiffin wali Maggi, to your neighbourhood bakery’s classic black forest cake, each dish will have an element from that era which will be represented in a way I think would be fun to experience in the present,” Bhatia shared with this diarist. Accompanied by a selection of ’90s and 2000s Indian pop music, the thematic supper club aims to leave its diners with new memories to take back home. Check out @theflavourdesigner for more details.

The right to read

There is a new library at the Meghraj Sethi Marg Municipal Secondary School in Byculla, thanks to the Library4All initiative by the Gabula Foundation. Co-founder Dr Ismat Gabula (inset) shared that the library, in collaboration with author Dania Khan, is the 187th unit by the non-profit.

Dr Gabula said, “With time, we began to curate. So, we now focus on what truly makes a difference, primarily to young readers in various languages — English, Hindi, Marathi and Gujarati.” After three years, the initiative will turn their focus to more such municipal schools to help children. “We look forward to doing many more such Library4all units together in underprivileged schools that need, and are eager to have the books for their students,” she concluded.

Let the games begin in Andheri

Andheri could become your new cool preferred hangout with your friends. Popular American entertainment centre, Dave and Buster’s, launched its first outlet in Mumbai at Infiniti Mall on August 10, making it a trippy place to enjoy quality gaming time alone or with your best buddies.

“Dave and Buster’s offer everything under one roof: Over 60 cutting-edge arcade games, including VR experiences and glow-in-the-dark nitro bowling, and large mega screens for live sports. It’s the ultimate destination for young adults and adults looking for an exciting mix of entertainment, food, and drinks all in one place,” shared Shreya Malpani, director, Malpani Group, master franchisee of the entertainment hub in India. With rains playing hide and seek, and Mumbai’s muggy season back, this indoor gaming experience might be just what the doctor ordered. Log on to daveandbustersindia.com for more details.
