IMD issues heatwave warning as Mumbai sizzles under relentless March sun

IMD issues yellow alert for city, 13 days after megapolis recorded its highest March temperature in five years while authorities urge precautions as hot coastal weather contrasts with expected rain in interior Maharashtra.

Mumbai and neighbouring districts will likely witness scorching conditions with the IMD issuing a yellow alert for the city, Thane, and Raigad, indicating heatwave conditions in isolated pockets on Monday and Tuesday, and for Palghar and Ratnagiri on Monday. The IMD had issued heatwave warnings for March 8 and 9. On March 10, Mumbai recorded the highest March temperature in five years — 40 degrees C.

On Monday, Santacruz recorded a temperature of 36.5 degrees C, with IMD indicating temperatures could shoot up to 38 degrees on Tuesday. While Coastal Maharashtra is likely to experience hot and dry weather, the IMD issued a rainfall alert for the state’s interior districts, indicating thundershowers, lightning, and gusty winds up to 40 to 50 kmph in Satara, Sangli, Solapur, Latur, and Dharashiv.

Do
>> Drink sufficient water, as often as possible, even if not thirsty
>> Consume oral rehydration solution, homemade drinks like lassi, torani (rice water), lemon water, and buttermilk
>> Wear lightweight, light-coloured, loose cotton clothes
>> If you feel dizzy or nauseous, see a doctor immediately
>> Employers must ensure that labourers do not work outside between noon and 3 pm

>> Avoid going out between 12 noon and 3 pm
>> Do not go out barefoot or without a face and head cover
>> Avoid cooking during peak hours. Open doors and windows to ventilate cooking area adequately
>> Avoid alcohol, tea, coffee, and carbonated soft drinks, which dehydrate the body
>> Avoid high-protein, spicy, and oily food. Do not eat stale food
