To rid the western side of Borivli railway station of traffic congestion, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) and Borivli Traffic Police have blocked about 12 crossings on a 100-metre section of SV Road between Moksh Plaza and Goragandhi Juice Corner over the past month.
According to the traffic police, thousands of vehicles ply this stretch daily. While it would take motorists 15 minutes to traverse it, this is no longer the case.

Earlier, the spot was plagued by encroaching vegetable vendors, but after mid-day repeatedly highlighted the menace, the BMC swung into action and acted against them.
A traffic police officer on anonymity said, “Three months ago, we held a meeting with the BMC’s R Central ward, and we decided to block all gaps used by pedestrians to cross the road. We decided to permanently block these shortcuts. A total of 12 such gaps were identified. There are various shops here,
including Indraprasth Shopping Centre, one of the oldest, which receives high footfall. We also blocked crossings in front of the shopping centre.”

“With the help of the BMC, we installed barricades at this spot. The civic body also set up fences to prevent people from climbing over them. Earlier, it would take 15 minutes to cross this patch. Now, this road is congestion-free, even in peak hours. Borivlikars are happy with our actions,” a traffic officer said on the condition of anonymity.
A BMC official added, “We are acting against hawkers with the help of staff from the Borivli police station. Cops are being deployed to vegetable markets to prevent illegal hawkers from plying their trade on the road.”

“We used to avoid the station area because of the traffic situation there, but this road is now free of congestion. Now, it takes me hardly four to five minutes to traverse the stretch. I am thankful to the traffic police and BMC for easing traffic congestion at this spot.”
Shivraj Manjrekar, Borivli resident
“I travel daily by bike via this route to get to my office. Because the road was congested, I used narrow lanes to reach my destination. I wish to thank the BMC and traffic police for freeing up this route. I can take my wife shopping in the area on my bike now.”
