A technical fault in a train at Andheri station caused delays on Mumbai Metro’s Ghatkopar-Versova Line 1 during Monday evening’s rush hour, officials said.

The snag was reported at around 5 pm, disrupting one of the city’s busiest metro corridors and inconveniencing thousands of commuters heading home.

Huge crowds were seen at metro stations due to a halt of services during peak hours.

“Services are delayed due to a technical fault. We regret the inconvenience and appreciate passengers’ patience while efforts are underway to restore services,” Mumbai Metro One Pvt Ltd (MMOPL) said on social media platform X at 5.30 pm.

Ten minutes later, MMOPL announced that services had resumed, though it did not specify the nature of the fault.

"Train operations have resumed. Efforts are on to regularise services as per schedule. We appreciate the continued support," said an another MMOPL post on X.

Sources told the PTI that a rake developed a glitch at Andheri, bringing it to a halt. The faulty train was later towed away by another rake.

"A train at Andheri Metro Station developed a technical fault today, but Mumbai Metro One’s rapid response team was quick to act. The affected train was coupled with a rescue train and cleared in record time, ensuring minimal disruption. Services were regularised within 15 to 20 minutes and are now running as per schedule, reaffirming Mumbai Metro One’s commitment to speed, safety and reliability," an official spokesperson said.

The disruption led to long queues and crowding at multiple metro stations. Some passengers claimed that there were no trains running between Versova and Ghatkopar for about 45 minutes and criticised the lack of clear announcements, as per the PTI.

An MMOPL spokesperson said further details of the incident would be shared later.

The Mumbai Metro Line 1, which serves around five lakh commuters daily, is a key east-west link connecting Versova, Andheri, and Ghatkopar. Opened in June 2014, it also integrates with other metro corridors — Line 2A at DN Nagar, Line 7 at Western Express Highway, and Line 3 at Marol Naka.

Meanwhile, In an another metro updates, Mumbai Metro Line 4 project is now over 84.5 per cent complete, the  Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) said on Monday after installing 56-metre steel span overnight at the Goregaon-Mulund Link Road (GMLR) section.

According to an official statement, the Metro Line 4 (Wadala to Kasarvadavali) took a significant step forward as a 56-metre-long, 450-tonne steel span was successfully installed overnight at the busy GMLR (Bhandup–Sonapur) Junction.

It said that the installation, carried out by MMRDA’s engineering teams, required precision under challenging conditions, including unseasonal rain.
