Mumbai Metro tunnel was reportedly damaged due to an unauthorised borewell drilling near Metro cinema in south Mumbai, officials said, adding that a police complaint has been filed in connection with the matter.

The Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation (MMRC) lodged a police complaint against a private water supplier for causing damage to a section of the Mumbai Metro Line 3, also known as the Aqua Line, reported the PTI.

According to MMRC, an FIR has been registered, although metro operations continue without disruption and services are running normally.

Officials highlighted that prior approval is compulsory for any excavation or construction work within a 50-metre influence zone of Metro Line-3 infrastructure.

MMRC urged individuals and agencies to strictly follow these guidelines and obtain necessary permissions to prevent such incidents.

The Damage

According to the PTI, while the MMRC did not disclose full details, a senior police officer stated that the incident occurred on March 5, when drilling caused a small hole on the left side of the underground tunnel.

An FIR was registered on March 13 at Azad Maidan Police Station under provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, citing negligent acts endangering safety, along with relevant sections of the Metro Act.

The accused has been identified as Rambabu Raay, proprietor of Chandrama Water Supply, the news agency reported.

Despite the incident, officials confirmed that there has been no impact on metro services.

About the Aqua Line

The 33.5-kilometre Aqua Line is India’s only fully underground metro corridor. It connects Cuffe Parade Metro Station in south Mumbai to Aarey JVLR Metro Station in the western suburbs.

Metro ticket booking

Meanwhile, Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis on Wednesday announced that the commuters can now book Mumbai Metro tickets directly through the Uber app, following a new integration with the Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC).

The move aims to make daily travel more convenient and improve last-mile connectivity, he said.

The feature has been launched initially for Mumbai Metro Line 2A and Mumbai Metro Line 7, with plans to extend it to Lines 9 and 2B in the near future, CM Fadnavis wrote on X.
