22 May,2025 10:56 PM IST | Mumbai | mid-day online correspondentThe Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has proposed the formation of a Fare Fixation Committee (FFC) for Mumbai Metro Lines 2A and 7, an official statement said on Thursday. It said, "In a move aligned with statutory provisions, the MMRDA has proposed the constitution of a Fare Fixation Committee under Section 33 and 34 (I) of the Metro Railways (Operations and Maintenance) Act, 2002." The step pertains specifically to Mumbai Metro Lines 2A and 7, currently operated by Maha Mumbai Metro Operation Corporation Limited (MMMOCL), it said. The committee will be responsible for reviewing and recommending fare structures for passengers using these metro lines. This step is being taken to ensure that fare decisions are made in a transparent and lawful manner, and does not mean there will be an immediate fare change, the MMRDA said. Metro Lines 2A and 7, which began operations on 2 April 2022, are currently managed by the Maha Mumbai Metro Operation Corporation Limited (MMMOCL). With a weekday ridership of around 2.65 lakh passengers, these metro lines are a crucial part of Mumbai’s public transport network. "The proposal, approved by the Authority, is an initiative for the compliance measure as mandated by the O&M Act. Section 34 clearly states that the Central Government may constitute a Fare Fixation Committee from time to time to recommend fare frameworks, ensuring a transparent and legally guided fare governance structure. As per the Act, the initial fares for Metro Lines 2A and 7 were determined by the Metro Railway Administration at the time of commencement of operations, which began on 2nd April 2022," the MMRDA said. It said that MMRDA, under the leadership of Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Deputy Chief Minister and MMRDA Chairman Eknath Shinde, remains committed to operational transparency and compliance with legal frameworks. The statement further stated that the proposal, sent to the Government of India, seeks only the formation of this committee, which-once constituted-will review the existing structure and recommend frameworks as per statutory norms. The formation of the FFC is a required governance mechanism and does not automatically imply any fare revision or adjustment, it said. "The proposal to constitute a Fare Fixation Committee is a statutory requirement under the Metro Railways (Operations and Maintenance) Act, 2002. It is not intended to suggest any immediate fare revision, but to ensure that our processes remain transparent, legally compliant, and in line with established governance frameworks. The Committee, once formed, will enable a structured and independent review mechanism as envisaged by law, reinforcing our commitment to accountable public transport administration," MMRDA said.

The all-party delegations will highlight India's national consensus and resolute approach to combating terrorism in all forms and manifestations. They would present before the world the country's strong message of zero tolerance against terrorism. Earlier in the day, a delegation headed by Shiv Sena Lok Sabha MP Shrikant Shinde met with Minister of Tolerance and Coexistence Sheikh Nahayan Mabarak Al Nahyan and parliamentarian Ali Rashid Al-Nuaimi in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates (UAE), as part of India's global outreach against terrorism after Operation Sindoor. The Indian Armed Forces targeted terror infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir. Over 100 terrorists affiliated with terror outfits like the Jaish-e-Mohammed, Lashkar-e-Taiba and Hizbul Mujahideen were killed in India’s strikes. After the operation, Pakistan resorted to cross-border shelling across the Line of Control and Jammu and Kashmir, in which India’s civilians were killed. Drone attacks were also attempted along the border regions but India thwarted them and launched a coordinated attack in response, damaging radar infrastructure, communication centres and airfields across 11 airbases in Pakistan. On May 10, an understanding of the cessation of hostilities between the countries was announced. (With ANI inputs)
22 May,2025 07:35 PM IST | Mumbai | mid-day online correspondentAdditional Municipal Commissioner (AMC) Abhijit Bangar has directed the officials concerned to complete all the ongoing road works and ensure they are safe for travel before May 31. Under the Road Cement Concreting Project, the work of Pavement Quality Concrete (PQC), which was expected to be completed by Tuesday, May 20, has been stopped and no new concrete road work can be undertaken without the additional municipal commissioner's approval. In cases where parts of a road remain unfinished after concrete laying before the May 31 deadline, the remaining sections should be completed using mastic asphalt to ensure the road is fit for smooth traffic, directed Bangar. The road cement and concretisation work is being carried out in the entire jurisdiction of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) to avoid potholes this monsoon season. In order to meet the deadline, Bangar has issued detailed guidelines. If a contractor does not commence the mastic asphalt work by Sunday, the task will be handed over to another available contractor, with the original contractor bearing the risk and expenses involved. A penalty equal to twice the cost required to make the site safe will be imposed on the contractor who fails to comply with the directives. All the completed project roads must undergo thorough cleaning of their stormwater drains, and their connectivity should be inspected, the additional municipal commissioner directed. To ensure there are no blockages, water should be flushed through the drains using tankers in the presence of officials from the ward office and the Storm Water Drainage Department. Additionally, sewer manholes should be cleaned and construction debris must be cleared from work sites, Bangar directed. 'Mumbai Rains: Manhole covers must be checked, daily progress updated on Google sheets' "Joint inspections by the relevant departments should confirm that water flow is unobstructed. All stormwater and sewer manhole covers must be checked, damaged or missing covers should be replaced immediately," he added. The additional municipal commissioner has also asked the road department officials to deploy adequate manpower and machinery to ensure that all roads are ready and safe for travel by May 31, ahead of Mumbai Rains. The daily progress should be updated on Google Sheets, Bangar told officials.
