A newly-inducted Mumbai Monorail rake suffered minor damage during a trial run near the Wadala Depot station, officials said. Only the train captain and an engineer from Medha SMH Rail Pvt. Ltd. were onboard at the time.
Preliminary information suggests the incident occurred due to non-availability of signalling equipment during testing. As the system could not detect the rake’s exact position, the operations control room reportedly moved the guideway beam switch while the train was still on the switch point, causing the mishap.
Officials said details about the extent of the damage and corrective measures are awaited.
In a statement, Maha Mumbai Metro Operation Corporation Ltd. (MMMOCL) said the incident took place during routine advanced system trials under its technology-upgradation programme, including testing of Communication-Based Train Control (CBTC) signalling being implemented by Medha.
“This was a minor incident during controlled trials and there were no injuries. The situation was brought under control immediately. The trials simulate worst-case scenarios to ensure preparedness before deployment,” MMMOCL stated, adding that the trials are internal safety tests and not operational failures.
The corporation urged citizens not to panic and noted that trial runs will continue as scheduled, including on holidays to meet project timelines.
