The trailer-truck crashed into several vehicles as it roared downhill on the expressway in Khalapur
One woman was killed and 18 people were injured in a multi-vehicle accident on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway around 1.40 pm on Saturday, after a trailer suffered brake failure in Khalapur taluka. The trailer-truck roared downhill, out of control, for 6km hitting several vehicles and causing a 25-car pile-up.
“One 58-year-old woman Anita Ekhande, a native of Dharashiv, died in the accident,” The superintendent of police, Raigad district, Anchal Dalal confirmed to Sunday mid-day. “Eighteen people are injured, two of them are critically wounded. They are recuperating at MGM Hospital in Panvel,” Dalal added.

Kuldip Salgotra, Medical Superintendent at MGM Hospital in Kamothe, said 17 of the victims have been admitted with them so far.
“Out of the 17, two are in critical condition with head and spinal injuries. Of them, one is on ventilator as of now,” said Salgotra.

Assistant Police Inspector Swapnil Patil of the Highway Police said, “The trailer driver, Rajesh Kumar Patel, a resident of Uttar Pradesh, has been detained and handed over to Khopoli Police. An FIR is likely to be registered after formal complaints from the drivers of the damaged vehicles.”
Traffic was restored smoothly by 4.30 pm after removing the damaged vehicles from the intercity expressway.
