Mumbai University (MU) has finally received its sanction to establish the ‘Ambedkar Chair’ and student facilities, as announced by the Union Minister for Social Justice & Empowerment, Dr Virendra Kumar, in February this year. A funding of Rs 75 lakh has been approved by the ministry for the Chair.
While the Chair has been allotted to the university, its activities will be conducted under the aegis of the existing Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar International Research Centre for Social Justice.
Under the Ambedkar Chair, the university will employ a Chair professor, an assistant professor, and two doctoral fellows.

The Chair was created with the motive of promoting research in line with the thoughts of Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar, who was an MU alumnus.
Currently, the research centre at the university runs master’s and postgraduate studies in development studies, Ambedkar thoughts, and Ambedkar studies. Now, the university is also eyeing master’s programmes in Buddhist Studies and Social Policy after receiving the Chair.
A lion’s share of the annual funds has been allocated to researchers’ salaries, while a substantial amount has also been allocated towards academic research, field research, seminars, and scholarly publications.
“At the moment, courses at the research centre have attracted a varied demographic, from housewives and lawyers to government officials and professors. The weekend courses are especially popular. After the university signs the relevant MoUs, the department will appoint a head professor and doctoral fellows and get on with research studies right away,” said a source at the centre.
The main objectives of this Chair include studying the impact of policies in the education and employment sector on the disadvantaged, suggesting useful schemes related to skill development, and organising various seminars, lectures and conferences. Also, special emphasis will be given to quality and inclusiveness in education through this Chair.
