After a week-long dry spell, Mumbai woke up to light to moderate rainfall across several parts of the city on Thursday morning. Some areas continued to receive showers through the night.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast a generally cloudy sky for Mumbai and its suburbs today, with the possibility of light rain or thundershowers in some areas.
In its nowcast warning issued at 7:00 AM, the IMD stated that light spells of rain are very likely to occur at isolated places across the districts of Mumbai and Thane over the next three to four hours. Citizens have been advised to take necessary precautions while stepping out.
High tide is expected at 11:08 AM with a height of 3.97 meters and again at 10:53 PM with a height of 3.42 meters. Low tide will occur at 5:13 PM at 2.04 meters and early tomorrow morning at 4:50 AM with a low of 0.80 meters.
Residents and commuters are urged to remain cautious during high tide hours, especially in low-lying areas prone to waterlogging.
Meanwhile, the water levels in lakes supplying drinking water to Mumbai have risen following heavy rainfall in their catchment areas. According to Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) data, the combined stock in the seven reservoirs that provide water to the city now stands at 89.18 per cent.
As per the BMC on Thursday (August 7), the collective water stock in these reservoirs is 12,90,817 million litres, which amounts to 89.18 per cent of their total capacity.
The BMC supplies drinking water daily from Upper Vaitarna, Modak Sagar, Tansa, Middle Vaitarna, Bhatsa, Vihar, and Tulsi lakes.
Of these, Tansa has 98.41 per cent water stock, Modak Sagar 99.99 per cent, Middle Vaitarna 94.76 per cent, Upper Vaitarna 82.76 per cent, Bhatsa 86.57 per cent, Vehar 73.28 per cent and Tulsi 84.64 per cent.
Lower (Modak Sagar), Middle and Upper Vaitarna lakes, along with Tansa, supply water to the western suburbs from Dahisar Check Naka to Bandra and to the western parts of the city from Mahim to Malabar Hill.
Bhatsa, Vehar, and Tulsi together form the Bhatsa system. Water from this system is treated at the Panjarpur Water Treatment Plant and distributed to the eastern parts of Mumbai, covering the eastern suburbs from Mulund Check Naka to Sion and further to Mazgaon.
