Mumbai’s new Coastal Road promenade, the city’s third sea-facing walkway after Marine Drive and Bandra Bandstand, opened to the public at 4.30 pm on Friday. Despite showers, crowds flocked to the 5.25 km stretch, enjoying the cycle track, underpasses, and decorations for Independence Day. Citizens urged BMC to add anti-skid safety measures.

Despite moderate to heavy showers, Mumbai’s newly opened Coastal Road promenade saw considerable footfall on its very first day, with Mumbaikars flocking to the spot from 3 pm onwards. The promenade was officially opened to the public by the BMC at 4.30 pm on Friday. This is the third sea-facing promenade in the city, after Marine Drive and Bandra Bandstand, and it also features an adjoining cycle track.
The promenade can be accessed via four pedestrian underpasses, which were opened for public use on Friday, out of a total of 11 underpasses constructed along the 7.5 km stretch. At present, 5.25 km of the promenade is open to the public. Mumbaikars were seen strolling with the tricolour, while several cyclists used the facilities on Friday evening. For the occasion of Independence Day, the BMC decorated the underpasses and several areas of the promenade with flowers and balloons in the colours of the national flag.

Sukhada Argade, a Worli resident who visited the promenade on Friday evening with her two children, said, “We were waiting for it to be inaugurated. Earlier, we would visit the Worli promenade every night after dinner, until it was closed during the construction of the Coastal Road. So we wanted to come on the very first day to experience this new open space.”
Aarif Khan, a tourist, said, “There are several nooks and spaces created by the civic body that are adding to the vibrant experience.” Citizens were also seen making reels and clicking selfies along the promenade. However, Mumbaikars have urged the civic body to ensure anti-skid markers and stickers are placed on the tiles of all pedestrian underpasses. Monika Mandana said, “It is good that it rained, because we were able to notice these things today itself, giving the civic body ample time to fix these small issues. There must be anti-skid stickers along all tiles and on the stairs in the underpasses. The stairs are slippery.”
