In the murder case of 32-year-old Vijay Chauhan, both accused — his wife Chaman Chauhan and her lover Monu Sharma — are allegedly protecting each other and narrating conflicting versions of the crime. While Chaman claims she poisoned her husband, Monu insists he strangled him to death. However, police suspect both are fabricating stories and hiding the truth. According to the police, Monu Sharma is an academically bright student who scored 95 per cent in BSc IT in 2nd year and is currently in the third year of his BSc IT.

Chaman’s version

Chaman Chauhan told the Pelhar police that she and Vijay had been married for 10 years and have a seven-year-old son. Their marriage was strained, and they often fought. In January, she fell in love with their neighbour Monu Sharma. While Vijay left for work at 7 am and returned at 9 pm, Chaman and Monu began meeting secretly. She stated that her husband and his family had discovered their affair. Vijay had found chats and photos on her phone, which led her to allegedly plan his murder.

Chaman claimed she killed her husband by mixing poison in his food. After his death, she said she called a labourer to dig the floor under the pretext of building a water tank. She later buried the body and fixed the tiles with the help of her brother-in-law, who, she insisted, was unaware of the crime.

She also told police she acted alone and that Monu had no involvement in the murder. Chaman even pleaded with the police to release Monu, stating that she loved him deeply.

Monu’s contradiction

Monu Sharma claimed he killed Vijay Chauhan by strangling him during an argument. According to him, he went to Vijay’s home when Chaman had gone to the market to buy vegetables. An argument between the two men escalated, and Monu claimed he strangled Vijay in a fit of rage.

Police doubt this version of events, pointing out that Vijay was physically strong and tall, while Monu may not have been capable of overpowering him single-handedly. Monu, too, told police that he acted alone and pleaded with them to release Chaman, claiming she had no involvement.

A police officer of the Pelhar police station said, “We checked Vijay Chauhan’s call records and found that his mobile switched off on July 2. We believe the accused gave him sleeping pills and then killed him by strangulation. The body was then buried beneath the floor of the house."

The incident came into light while the family of Vijay Chauhan found his mobile phone with his wife Chaman Chauhan and three new tiles. Despite the conflicting narratives, police suspect that both Chaman and Monu were involved in the murder and are trying to shield one another by giving false confessions.
