More than 1100 students, teachers and parents from Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) schools in Koparkhairane formed a massive human chain on Thursday, January 8, urging citizens to vote in the civic elections scheduled for January 15.
The initiative was organised under the Systematic Voters’ Education and Electoral Participation (SVEEP) programme, implemented under the guidance of NMMC Chief and Election Officer Dr Kailas Shinde. Students from NMMC Schools No. 36 and 122 in Koparkhairane village actively participated, spreading awareness about the importance of voting.
The programme was held under the supervision of SVEEP Nodal Officer and Deputy Commissioner Dr Ajay Gadade and Deputy Commissioner (Education) Sanghratna Khillare. It was coordinated by Education Extension Officer Sulabha Barghare and Centre Coordinator Jayprakash Singh.
Raising slogans such as “Voter Raja Jaga Ho – Lokshahicha Dhaga Ho”, “My Vote, My Right” and “Vote for Our Future”, students marched through the locality carrying placards, drawing the attention of residents and passers-by. The campaign aimed to motivate first-time and hesitant voters while sensitising parents through their children.
This year, the NMMC elections are being conducted under a multi-member ward system for the first time. Voters in Wards 1 to 27 will cast four votes — one each for candidates contesting seats A, B, C and D — while voters in Ward 28 will cast three votes for seats A, B and C. To avoid confusion, the civic body has intensified voter education through pamphlets, banners, digital displays, cinema screenings and social media videos.
NMMC officials said the enthusiastic participation of school students has significantly boosted voter awareness in neighbourhoods. The Koparkhairane rally and human chain, in particular, received an overwhelming response from citizens, reinforcing the importance of informed and active participation in local democracy.
