Maharashtra Cultural Affairs Minister Ashish Shelar on Thursday announced a twofold increase in prize money, production grants and daily allowances given to participants of the state drama competition, reported the PTI.
A government resolution (GR) to this effect was issued during the day, officials said.
Organised annually by the Directorate of Cultural Affairs, the Maharashtra State Drama Competition features categories such as Amateur Marathi, Hindi, Musical, Sanskrit, Children's Theatre, Divyang Children's Theatre, and Professional Theatre.
Participating groups have long demanded an increase in financial support, citing rising production costs and travel expenses.
Responding to these appeals, the state government has now doubled the financial assistance provided under three key heads - prize money for winning teams, production grant given after a play is staged, and daily allowance for artists performing outside their home location, according to the PTI.
The revised amounts, which will come into effect from the 64th Maharashtra State Drama Competition commencing on November 3, 2025, is expected to encourage broader participation and elevate the standard of theatre productions.
Have urged Netflix to provide space for Marathi content on platform: Shelar
Meanwhile, earlier this month, Shelar had made a strong pitch for promoting Marathi content on global streaming platforms.
During the LA Waves Summit organised by the US-India Business Council (USIBC) at the Netflix headquarters, he had urged to provide space for Marathi content on platform.
In a post on X, Shelar wrote, "While interacting with representatives from various fields at the LA Waves Summit organised at Netflix headquarters, I urged the American entertainment industry to take advantage of Maharashtra’s growing media and content capabilities. On this occasion, I specifically requested Netflix to provide space for Marathi content on their platform. Every Indian language has its own heritage, and it is a unique story worth telling the world. I felt immense joy in celebrating Marathi art, language, and talent on this global platform."
He specifically requested Netflix to provide space for Marathi content on its platform, highlighting the rich cultural legacy and storytelling tradition of Indian regional languages.
“Each Indian language has its own heritage and unique stories to share with the world,” Shelar wrote on X.
