The Opposition in Maharashtra has decided to challenge the alleged voter list irregularities both legally and publicly. The Opposition announced its plans to move the courts, simultaneously urging citizens to verify their names on the electoral rolls and even to decide whether such elections with so many errors in voters’ lists should be allowed.
Leaders from the Shiv Sena (UBT), Congress, Sharad Pawar’s NCP and the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) held a joint rally called “March for Truth” (Satyacha Morcha) outside BMC headquarters in Mumbai on Saturday. The rally was organised to protest against large-scale irregularities in the voters list. The election for BMC and 28 other municipal corporations and other local bodies is likely to be conducted before January 31, 2026.
MNS chief Raj Thackeray alleged that around 4500 bogus votes were cast in the Malabar Hill Assembly constituency by people registered in areas of Kalyan rural, Bhiwandi and Murbad. “This is just one example; there are lakhs of such cases,” the MNS chief added, terming the rally “a show of strength and anger, and a message to Delhi”.
Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray said, “We will go to court against the irregularities in the voters list. We hope to get justice. But, if we do not get justice, then it is for the people to decide whether such elections should be allowed.”
NCP chief Sharad Pawar, addressing the crowd, said that though ideology is different, the parties have come together to save democracy.
Mumbai BJP unit president Ameet Satam said the Opposition knows it cannot win elections and is trying to build a case for defeat in anticipation.
