In a new rule, BMC chief Iqbal Singh Chahal has said co-operative societies with five and more active COVID cases would be sealed and treated as ‘micro containment zones’. Further, to ensure that restrictions are followed, police personnel would be stationed outside such societies to monitor residents’ and visitors’ movements.

Violators would be fined Rs 10,000 in the first instance and Rs 20,000 for every subsequent violation.

Outsiders would be denied entry to the building and restrictions would be monitored by the housing society. Doorstep deliveries of products through e-commerce, newspapers, food items, essential items won’t be allowed and the societies would have to devise ways to make them reach residents.

Rules such as stepping out only in case of emergencies would also apply in the housing society. Society office-bearers would also be tasked with sealing the flats with positive cases.

A civic official said, “We have been instructed to carry out surprise visits and take all the necessary precautions to ensure there are no problems and the spread of the virus is controlled.”

Beaches shut

Modifying the state government’s guidelines for entry timings at beaches, the BMC has shut all beaches throughout the week till April 30.
