A portion of a staircase collapsed at a building in South Mumbai on Sunday evening. The incident was reported at 7.43 pm by the Mumbai Fire Brigade (MFB).

The collapse occurred at a ground-plus-two structure Building No 14/16, Prabhu Gully, near Marine Lines station in Chira Bazar.

According to Dr Gokul, the resident medical officer at GT Hospital, three people have been injured in the incident. Their condition is said to be stable. The injured have been identified as Paresh Sosate (30), Parag Nazijka (40), and Damayanti Rathod (70).

The MFB, police, 108 ambulance services, and ward staff have been mobilised to the site to assist with evacuation and provide medical support. Rescue operations are currently underway.

Authorities are assessing the building for safety and the cause of the collapse.

According to RTI activist Jitendra Dagde, the building housed 17 tenants, all of whom were safely evacuated by local residents and fire brigade personnel. Upon receiving information about the collapse, Shiv Sena Shakha Pramukh Nilesh Bhoite, Vibhag Pramukh Dilip Naik, Yuva Sena executive member Ruchi Wadkar, and Upashakha Pramukh Kartik Nandola rushed to the spot and reassured the affected families. They also held discussions with MHADA Executive Engineer Birajdar, requesting immediate arrangements to shift all residents to a transit camp starting Monday morning.

19 tree fall incidents reported in Mumbai

According to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), six short circuits, 19 tree or branch falls, and two wall collapse incidents were reported across the city during the day, PTI reported. No injuries were reported in any of these accidents.

Mumbai experienced another day of rain on Sunday under an 'orange alert’ issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD), though the intensity was lower compared to Saturday, officials said.

In its monsoon report, the BMC said the Island City, eastern suburbs and western suburbs recorded average rainfalls of 23.81 mm, 25.01 mm and 18.47 mm, respectively, between 8 am and 6 pm on Sunday. Some areas received between 40-45 mm of rainfall, reported PTI.

After heavy overnight downpours, rain intensity reduced on Sunday morning, with light showers and occasional heavy spells, and no major waterlogging was reported, the IMD said earlier.

Mumbai’s local trains on the Central Railway ran slightly behind schedule in the morning, though authorities did not give a reason for the delay. BEST bus services operated without any route diversions, officials added.

The IMD had issued an 'orange' alert for the day, predicting heavy to very heavy rainfall at a few places during the day in Mumbai and neighbouring Thane, Raigad and Palghar districts. The occasional gust of the winds could be 40-50 kmph per hour and might reach 60 kmph, it had said.

Heavy downpours pummelled Mumbai and its suburbs on Saturday, with some parts recording more than 200 mm of rain in the wee hours, inundating low-lying areas.

Two persons were killed and as many others sustained injuries in a landslide amid rains in the Vikhroli Parksite area in the eastern suburbs on Saturday.
