Maharashtra Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik announced that the long-pending technical obstacle in the Surya Water Supply Scheme (Phase 2), which provides water to Mira-Bhayandar city in Thane district of Maharashtra, has now been resolved. As a result, the Mira-Bhayandar Municipal Corporation (MBMC) will start receiving full-capacity water supply from March 2026, officials said on Tuesday.
According to an official statement, Sarnaik held a review meeting at Mantralaya with senior officials, including MBMC Commissioner Radha Binod Sharma, Additional Executive Engineer Rahul Nandurkar, MMRDA Superintendent Engineer Chetan Bembale, MSEB Executive Engineer Ajay Athawale and Water Resources Department Superintendent Engineer Sandeep Nalawade and discussed the development.
Until now, the pumps used in the Surya Water Supply Scheme could not operate at full capacity because the existing 33 kV electricity supply was inadequate, officials said.
They said that Mahapareshan has now granted technical approval for a 132 kV high-voltage power supply for the project. This power will be provided through a new 132 kV transmission system being constructed via Diva.
With the upgraded supply, the pumping system will operate at 100 per cent efficiency, making it possible to lift the entire 218 MLD (million litres per day) of water planned under the scheme. Mira-Bhayandar city in Thane district will then receive a stable, planned and increased water supply in the entire area..
The installation of the new transmission line and transformers is progressing quickly, and all works are expected to be completed by March 2026. Remaining components of the project will also be finished by the end of March 2026, the statement said.
The project is expected to significantly reduce the city’s dependence on alternative water sources and bring long-term stability to the supply network.
Officials noted that once operational, the upgraded system will not only meet current demand but also support future population growth, ensuring reliable access to drinking water for residents across Mira-Bhayandar.
