A 16-year-old girl allegedly committed suicide at her home in Maharashtra's Thane district after her family opposed her relationship with a male cousin, police said on Thursday.
An official from Tilak Nagar police station said the incident took place on Tuesday at Khambalpada in the Dombivli area, reported news agency PTI.
The official said the girl had informed her family about falling in love with her maternal uncle's 25-year-old son, who lives in the Ulhasnagar area of Thane.
Her parents vehemently opposed the relationship, attempting to reason with her, but their efforts were futile, he said, reported PTI.
On Tuesday afternoon, the tragic incident unfolded as the girl allegedly took her own life by hanging herself from the ceiling of her home, leaving her family in shock and disbelief, the official said.
The family members later rushed the teenager to a nearby hospital, where doctors declared her dead, he said.
The body was subsequently sent to a government hospital for postmortem.
The police have registered a case of accidental death, the official said, reported PTI.

A police official on Monday said that a 19-year-old man from Varanasi has been arrested for allegedly attacking a teenage girl in western Mumbai after she ignored him, reported news agency PTI.
Accused Rahul Singh targeted the 17-year-old girl at Gosalia Road in Sanjay Nagar of Kandivali (West) on May 24 when she was walking with a friend, reported PTI.
Singh allegedly abused her, picked up a brick lying on the roadside and slammed it on her head. He also smashed her mobile phone, the official said.
The teen sustained serious injuries and was rushed to the civic-run Shatabdi Hospital. During the probe, police learnt that Singh, a resident of Varanasi, came to Mumbai as the girl was not taking his calls, the official said, adding that the two know each other very well, reported PTI.
The accused has been booked under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. A probe is underway, the official said.
