A balcony of a two-storey chawl collapsed in Maharashtra's Thane district. The unfortunate incident which happened at Thane trapped 30 residents who were later rescued, officials said on Sunday.
The Thane Municipal Corporation's disaster management cell chief, Yasin Tadvi, while informing about the incident, asserted that no one was injured and all the people trapped inside were safely evacuated by the authorities. As per the reports, the incident took place at 11.36 pm on Saturday at Savalaram Smriti Chawl (row tenement) in the Diva area.
After being alerted, the disaster cell team further informed police authorities. Soon after, the fire department was also alerted about the same, and the personnel rushed to the spot within a few minutes.
The official, while highlighting the incident, said that “There were 50 to 55 persons staying in the chawl, which has 21 flats,” as per PTI.
While asserting about the evacuation of the trapped people, one of the fire officials emphasised that "a total of 30 residents were trapped in some flats due to the gallery (balcony) collapse. Our fire brigade personnel safely rescued all of them without any harm."
Soon after the incident, the civic officials have now declared the structure unsafe. While marking the premises as unsafe, the civic authority official said, "Since the chawl is in a dangerous condition, we have evacuated all the flats," quoted PTI.
Two dead, three injured as soil collapses on labourers at Byculla
Two labourers were killed and three others injured when a portion of soil and mud collapsed during foundation and piling work at a building site in Habib Mansion on Hans Road in Mumbai’s Byculla (West), on Saturday afternoon.
Soon after the unfortunate incident that took place, the labourers were rushed to Nair Hospital around 2.40 pm.
At 4.15 pm, Dr Poonam, the hospital’s assistant medical officer, said that two of the labourers brought to the hospital—Rahul (30) and Raju (28)—had already died. The injured—Sajjad Ali (25), Sobat Ali (28), and Lal Mohd (18)—are undergoing treatment, and their condition is said to be stable.
Rescue teams reached the site immediately following the accident to assist the trapped workers. Investigations are underway to determine the exact cause of the soil collapse, and authorities have urged construction companies to adhere strictly to safety protocols to prevent similar incidents in the future.
