Students of civic schools in Thane will soon have the opportunity to learn about the biodiversity of the city. The Thane Municipal Corporation is set to launch an environmental training program for students in grades 5 to 10. “This program aims to make around 7,000 students from civic schools environmentally literate. We’ve partnered with the Bombay Natural History Society (BNHS) to create a special program for municipal school students. It will provide them with a chance to explore nature and understand the importance of biodiversity conservation,” said Abhijit Bangar, the civic chief.

During this programme, the education officer and coordinator from BNHS will conduct interactive and concept-based presentations on environmental awareness. Various activities, including programs on birds, butterflies, plants, local biodiversity, plastic pollution, the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, and eco-friendly lifestyles, are planned for the upcoming year. Students from municipal schools will also be taken on study tours to different locations such as the Conservation Education Centre and Thane creek, where they will be guided in making notes about mangroves, plants, and birds.

“This initiative will provide students in municipal schools with a cleaner and more environmentally conscious education. They will learn about Mumbai-Thane’s environment, forests, wildlife, biodiversity, and our role in their conservation. By reaching a maximum number of students and teachers, this initiative will significantly increase environmental literacy,” the official explained.
