Says Resul Pookutty while addressing students at FTII yesterday. Pookutty believes that even an Oscar cannot change the film industry's approach towards technicians
In spite of winning the prestigious Oscar, Resul Pookutty is not a happy man. And this is simply because of the way technicians are treated in the film industry.
"I have won an Oscar and I am the first Asian to enter the Cinema Audio Society. Yet, I have not been acknowledged by the Mumbai film industry," said Pookutty, who was at the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) yesterday.
No invites
"It's only the actors who get accolades, as they are the face of the product. But it's high time that technicians get credit, as we're the ones who make the product," Pookutty said.
Technicians will rule
Speaking about his feat, Pookutty said, "The Oscar means a lot to me and it is, in fact, a recognition for all the technicians who are a part of filmmaking."
He added that sound has always been a major part of cinema. "This victory has brought sound to the forefront and I believe that the coming years will be a golden period for the technical categories," he adds.
When asked about his current projects and future plans, Pookutty said, "I am working on a few Hollywood projects. But it is my work in India that has taken me this far and hence, my workstation will always be in India."
Pookutty also has plans to open a sound design school. "Several sound design schools have suddenly mushroomed after the Oscars. But good quality education in this field can be acquired only in a film institute.

Woh beete lamhe...
Recalling his student days at FTII, Pookutty said, "I was always interested in sound even when I was in school. But I didn't get admission into the FTII in the first attempt.
Also, I was very mischievous and was rusticated thrice from the hostel." He added that the three years he spent in FTII changed him completely.
