Senior journalists from the city react to the brutal killing of Jyotirmoy Dey
B Mahesh, Resident Editor, Bangalore Mirror
The whole incident is very tragic. I came across J Dey's work in the late 1980's when he was working with Indian Express. He was very professional and a really good competitor. He had vast experience and was very generous with his knowledge. He mentored not only the people he worked with, but also reporters from different organisations. He was not a self-promoting journalist and had an ear to the ground. The country has lost a great journalist and the loss will be felt in the years to come. He will always be remembered as a reporter who did not rest on his laurels and even though he headed a team, he still visited crime spots and reported from the ground.
The media should get together to pressurise the government so that the culprits can be brought to book.
Azmath, Bureau Chief (Crime), Bangalore Mirror
The Maharashtra chief minister and home minister are making the right noises, but the ground reality is completely different. Instead of leaving the investigation solely to the police, the media should also investigate and find out who the culprits are and alert the police. This would be a real tribute to Dey and also a fitting reply to the underworld, if they indeed have a role to play in his murder.

The incident is very tragic. Being abused or being beaten up is common in a profession like investigative journalism. But it is high time that the government provides proper protection to journalists, who are fighting hard to reveal the truth. Serious action should be taken against the murderers.

Dey belonged to the extremely uncompromising and bold breed of journalists, who dared to challenge the might of dons in Mumbai. He was killed because he had the courage to speak the truth. I salute the fearless spirit of journalism that Dey had been known for. The culprits must be brought to justice. May God give his family enough strength to bear the loss and we pray for the departed soul.
Ravi Joshi, Resident Editor, DNA BangaloreI am shocked that such an incident took place in broad daylight. I worked with J Dey in Hindustan Times in 2005. He would always keep to himself and he had the habit of talking in code. I remember him for the kind of stories he did and the way he handled them. If I had such stories about the underworld dons like he did, I would be jumping up and down. He would go to the field, finish his story and get photos as well. He was always calm and collected. We as the media need to see whether he gets justice.
