Once known for his sensational statements, BJP leader Madanlal Khurana is playing it safe this time around

Hindsight is a handy tool. Once chastened for expressing his opinions during the Advani controversy (the latter had praised MA Jinnah in Pakistan), Madan Lal Khurana has chosen to remain silent this time around.

"I won't want to make any political comment at this juncture," said the BJP leader about the Jaswant controversy.

The former Delhi chief minister and governor of Rajasthan, Khurana, was rather vocal in his criticism of Advani for his statements in Pakistan on Jinnah's secular credentials. And he had to pay a heavy price for that. So now, he is playing it safe.

"At a personnel level, I have a good relationship with everyone including Jaswant Singh, Arun Shourie and Yaswant Sinha. I meet them whenever I get time. These days, I am not concentrating so much on politics," Khurana said.

Known for his strong reactions to provocative questions, Khurana these days is presenting a much milder side of himself to the media.

He says yoga guru Baba Ramdev has brought about a change in him. "Baba Ramdev is my ideologue. After my resignation as the Rajasthan governor, I am in regular touch with Swamiji," Khurana told MiD DAY.

Khurana, along with former law minister Ram Jethmalani, have been working closely with Ramdev on issues like cleaning of Ganga and bringing back black money parked in Swiss banks.

"Ram Jethmalani and I are leaving for Hardwar for two days to meet Swami Ramdev. For me, the cleaning of Ganga, which is polluted even 60 years after Independence, and the black money of Indians in Swiss banks are the most important issues at present and we will work on them together," he added.u00a0

After Advani's visit to Pakistan and his comment on Jinnah, Khurana had written to Advani asking him to quit both as party president and leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, the Lower House of Parliament. Later, Khurana was expelled from the BJP when he criticised the then BJP president LK Advani on the latter's remarks on IC-814 hijack. He was chief minister of Delhi between 1993 and 1996.

He was forced to quit over the hawala scandal.

Later, he served as governor of Rajasthan between January and October 2004.
