Kiran Divati recalls how he had to take his roommate, who had been stabbed, to hospital on his two-wheeler because no one around him came forward to help
A 27-year-old HR professional who was stabbed to death by an acquaintance yesterday (check) had no help from neighbours and passers-by during his dying moments.
Manoj Kumar Kumble, an HR assistant at TNT Logistic Transport, had to be taken to hospital on his roommate's two-wheeler since there was no other means of transport.
Nightmare
Divati said he knew Kumble for the past four years and the two had been sharing a rented house at BTM Layout since August 2008.
"It was around 11.30 pm. I was relaxing at home, watching TV and Kumble was busy washing clothes.
"I heard someone calling Kumble's name from outside and he went out to have a look. I heard him saying, ' how did you get my house?'," Divati recalled.
"I saw both Kumble and the visitor walking out of the house but couldn't clearly see the visitor as it was dark. I continued watching TV and 15 minutes later, I heard Kumble shouting my name at the top of his voice. I thought it was a prank but went outside. I was shocked to see Manoj trembling and shouting 'Bike! Bike!',
pointing in one direction.
"I ran in that direction and saw the visitor zooming away on his bike. I rushed back to Kumble's help but he had collapsed by then, an arm around the stomach.
"Sensing danger, I raised an alarm for help, following which neighbours and passers-by gathered at the scene. Kumble was bleeding and slipping into unconsciousness. For a few minutes, my mind went blank, but I soon became conscious and immediately called my friend Varun Dev for help.
"Varun reached the spot a few minutes later and we decided to take Manoj to the hospital. Till then, the neighbours and passers-by had not even suggested that we rush him to hospital. Nor did they arrange a vehicle," he added.
Over in minutes
"I took out my two-wheeler from the compound and asked Varun to help. We three rode to Spurthi Hospital, with Kumble in the middle. "I was shocked as everything was over within minutes. I lost my friend," Divati told the police. "I called up the police soon after the doctor told me he was no more. The police came to the hospital and took some information and left in a hurry," he added.
Be a good Samaritan
A senior police officer said that people should not think twice about helping a victim and should also cooperate with investigations.
"Majority of the people hesitate to help because they may have to appear before the court as witnesses. But this takes less than half a day. They are also paid a travel allowance," he said.u00a0
So what really stops them?
Another police officer said, people generally keep away due to delays in court proceedings.
According to the law, the witness should get a paid leave irrespective of his profession while he attends court. However, private employers suspect the integrity of the employee, which could result in the witness losing his job.u00a0
"Moreover, the defence counsel may bully the witness, a situation which the witness would rather avoid," the officer added.
