State Cong and NCP announce separate plans to tackle water woes; also, NCP's Chhagan Bhujbal to share dais with BJP's Gopinath Munde to discuss scarcity

1 coalition, 2 different plans

With growing concerns that the state government is out of its depth in tackling growing water scarcity as it spreads across the state, the issue is already being politicised, with parties trying to outdo each other with committees and meetings on the issue.

Even though they are members of one coalition that forms the state government, the Congress and the NCP have announced separate plans to assess the possibility of water scarcity in the summer months.

And defying all expectations, NCP man Chhagan Bhujbal and BJP leader Gopinath Munde will be sharing the same platform to discuss their views on the issue.

The announcements
The Congress on Wednesday announced a committee to be headed by the Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee chief Manikrao Thakre to assess the ground realities of water scarcity. It will submit a report to the government on the issue, the party has stated.

Not to be left behind, NCP yesterday announced a meeting of its party ministers on January 15 at the Y B Chavan Centre. The party will dwell on concrete methods to prevent a statewide catastrophe. Party spokesman Nawab Malik made the announcement.

On common ground
Even as the BJP is busy trying to pin PWD Minister Bhujbal over his alleged involvement in scams, the party’s deputy leader in the Lok Sabha Gopinath Munde will share a dais with the leader today to address a seminar on water.

Munde has already announced his plan to launch a campaign to salvage the water situation and is expected to share his views on planning water resources and effective water management. Retired senior bureaucrat D M More will also participate in the seminar organised by Mitra Foundation at Y B Chavan Centre today.

“It will be interesting to see how Munde tries to expose the government, as Bhujbal tries to defend it,” said an office bearer of the foundation.u00a0
