To minimise errors during voter registration, the state election commission has granted permission to returning officers from the district to carry out data entry work
In a bid to avoid data entry errors in the voters’ registration list, the state election commission has given permission to the district collectorate to commence entry of voter details at the district level. The data entry, which is necessary to identify a voter’s information, is currently being done by a central agency.
With the latest development, the registration of new voters — which commences from May 29 — and data entry work of received applications would be now carried out at the district level.
“After every registration of new voters, we receive a huge number of complaints from the voters regarding errors in their names, gender and age. Such errors used to occur due the centralised system of data entry. Therefore, it was decided in a recently held high-power committee meeting that 21 assistant returning officers in Pune district
will look after the registration work at the district level,” said District Collector Saurabh Rao.
“Earlier, the district had no control while making the final voters’ list, as the data entry work used to be done in an another state. Besides, the centralised agency used to delay sending the copy of the final voter’s list. So, to avoid this the state election commission has decided to rectify all previous mistakes before the assembly elections by giving permission to get work done at the state level,” Rao said.
