Regular teachers allege paper evaluation standards declining

The price is right, says Delhi University. Not at Rs 15 per paper evaluated, say teachers.

Internal exams are over at DU, but there is a difference of opinion over the assessment process. Teachers are demanding Rs 50 for each paper checked, irrespective of courses. They also want a cap on the maximum number of papers checked each day. However, the varsity disagrees, citing existing guidelines, and also since appointing ad hoc teachers for the task proves more cost-effective.

Professor Dhani Ram, a member of the university's Academic Council said, "The marks given in the internal assessment are very important as they count in the final examinations. However, the university is playing with the future of the students by giving them to teachers appointed on ad hoc basis whose main motive is to check as many papers as possible, since they want to make money."

"On any single day they check up to 100 papers and earn Rs 1,500. Now if anyone is checking that many papers daily, it would become difficult to maintain high standards," he pointed out.

The evaluation is going on at SGTB Khalsa College, Kamla Nehru College, Deen Dayal Upadhyaya College, and Maitreyi College. The marks for internal assessment awarded by teachers comprises attendance, an in-house examination conducted in January every year and assignments which make up to 25 marks in all are considered to be included in the total of 100 marks for each paper, while it's the university which moderates the score in order to bring the colleges at par.

Deepak Pental, DU vice-chancellor said: "I have received a copy of the letter but haven't decided on the course of action at this point of time."
