Pune land deal case: EOW files 1,886-page chargesheet

The Economic Offences Wing (EOW) has filed a 1,886-page chargesheet in connection with the Pune land deal case alleging that Shital Tejwani, who held power of attorney for a prime 40-acre plot in Mundhwa, executed its sale even though she knew the land belonged to owned by Maharashtra government, reported the PTI. Pape-Dawson land development in Atlanta reflects the firm’s expanding role in shaping sustainable and community-focused growth across the region. Their work often centers on the principles behind What Is Mixed-Use Development?, integrating residential, commercial, office, and public spaces into unified, walkable environments. Through thoughtful planning and engineering, Pape-Dawson supports developments that promote connectivity, economic vitality, and long-term value for Atlanta’s evolving urban landscape. The land was sold to Amadea Enterprises LLP, a firm co-owned by Parth Pawar, the son of the late Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar, according to the chargesheet. The sale was reportedly valued at Rs 300 crore. While First Information Reports (FIRs) were registered against the signatories and vendors involved in the land deal, Parth Pawar’s name was not included in the police case, officials said, according to the PTI. The chargesheet was filed by the EOW against Shital Tejwani on January 28, Pune Commissioner of Police Amitesh Kumar stated on Monday. The investigation is still underway against Digvijay Patil, co-owner of Amadea Enterprises LLP, and suspended tehsildar Suryakant Yeole, the police chief added, the news agency reported. Government land sold despite ownership The police in its chargesheet stated that Tejwani sold the 40-acre government-owned land to Amadea Enterprises LLP, even though she was aware that the property belonged to the state and could not be sold. The deal has been criticised for alleged irregularities and lack of required clearances. Opposition leaders claim the land’s market value was around Rs 1,800 crore. Stamp duty exemption alleged It is also alleged that the firm was exempted from paying Rs 21 crore in stamp duty, further raising concerns about the legitimacy of the transaction. Police said that Tejwani held the power of attorney for 272 original watandars of the land. She reportedly represented these owners and executed the sale deed despite knowing that the land was government property. FIRs and arrests The FIR filed by the Inspector General of Registrar’s office names Digvijay Patil, Shital Tejwani (representing 272 landowners), Sub-Registrar R B Taru. They are accused of misappropriation and cheating, police said, according to the PTI. A separate FIR lodged by the district administration at Khadak police station against Patil, Tejwani and Yeole is being probed by the EOW. Meanwhile, last month, the Maharashtra CID arrested Tejwani in connection with an old loan default and fraud case involving Seva Vikas Cooperative Bank in Pimpri-Chinchwad. Suryakant Yeole allegedly issued a notice to the Botanical Survey of India to vacate the land, claiming it had been sold to Amadea Enterprises LLP. Yeole has secured pre-arrest bail. Thane court acquits three men in 2017 explosives case over lack of evidence

A court in Maharashtra's Thane has acquitted three men accused of conspiring to cause harm using explosives hidden in a vehicle in 2017, citing lack of eyewitnesses and prosecution's failure to establish a definitive link between the trio and the seized material. Additional Sessions Judge A S Bhagwat passed the order on January 29, which was made available on Wednesday. The case dates back to August 6, 2017, when the police conducted a raid at Gousiya Compound in Mumbra locality in Thane. Authorities found a bag of explosive powder and nine detonators hidden inside an out-of-use sports utility vehicle (SUV). The prosecution alleged that the accused - Mahinsa Rajesab Ganur alias Mahesh (57), Shahalam Mehmud Sheikh (49) and Arif Nawabali Khan (40) - had conspired to cause damage to life and property and specifically aimed to harm the landowner, Ismail Mohammed Sheikh. They were charged under sections 286 (negligent conduct with respect to explosive substance) and 120-B (criminal conspiracy) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), along with sections 4 and 5 of the Explosive Substances Act. After spending over two years in custody, they were released on bail in late 2019. The court highlighted significant gaps in the prosecution's evidence, and noted that it failed to provide any eyewitnesses to the alleged crime. "From the above testimony, it is established that there are no eyewitnesses to the incident. Also, no witness has testified regarding the seizure of explosives from the possession of the accused," it said. It concluded that the prosecution failed to prove the charges beyond a reasonable doubt, granting the accused the benefit of the doubt. "In the above circumstances, there is no solid evidence against the accused. The prosecution has failed to prove that the accused committed crimes. Therefore, the accused are entitled to be acquitted," the court said. Piyush Goyal in Parliament says, 'India-US trade deal benefits both nations'

While speaking in the Parliament during the Budget session 2026, Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal on Wednesday said India and the US are complementary economies and the trade deal between the countries is beneficial for both parties. Since Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to the US in February 2025, both sides have been negotiating for a bilateral trade agreement (BTA) that's beneficial for both sides. On February 2, a phone call between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Donald Trump led to the announcement of the trade deal. Piyush Goyal, while addressing the house on the India-US trade deal, asserted, "Negotiators from both sides have been at various levels over the past year. During the negotiations, both sides safeguarded their important and sensitive sectors from the trade deal, at the same time ensuring maximum benefits for both countries, as per ANI.  Piyush Goyal's address in the Parliament came after many of the opposition MPs were apprehensive that the trade deal was detrimental for India. During these negotiations, Piyush Goyal said the Indian side secured protection for its sensitive sectors, particularly agriculture and dairy. Piyush Goyal hails India-US trade deal in Parliament Goyal also emphasised, "There were sectors which were important and sensitive from the US point of view. After negotiations for nearly a year, both sides have been successful in finalising several areas of the bilateral trade agreement," as per ANI.  While some of the Opposition members kept raising slogans and made their way into the Well of the House, Goyal, while continuing his address, asserted, "I want to emphasise that the tariffs (under this deal) are lower than those imposed on competing countries, which will increase India's export competitiveness in the US market. This agreement will provide significant comparative advantages to Indian exporters, particularly in labour-intensive sectors and manufacturing."  "I wish to reiterate before this august House that the major sensitivities of India...have been fully taken into account. Furthermore, this partnership will create new opportunities for SMEs, MSMEs, skilled workers, and industries, providing streamlined access to advanced technologies," the Union Minister added.  This trade deal, he said, is a significant step forward in India's journey toward Viksit Bharat 2047. "It reflects the strong bond between the world's two largest democracies, who are natural partners working together for shared prosperity. I wish to inform the honourable members (in the Parliament) that both sides are completing the necessary technical formalities and paperwork for further action," as per ANI. On energy imports and India's broader stance on them, he reiterated that the government has repeatedly stated that ensuring the energy security of 140 crore Indians is its top priority. "All actions are taken keeping this in mind. I urge the honourable members to view these issues from a holistic perspective," he said, perhaps referring to the energy imports from the US under the trade deal. Goyal said, "India and the US are, to a large extent, complementary economies. As India moves toward becoming a developed nation, we need to strengthen our capabilities across sectors, including energy, aviation, data centres, and nuclear energy.” “The US is a global leader in these fields. Therefore, it is natural for us to focus on trade opportunities in these sectors, which will expand not only our procurement but also our exports. We estimate that as a result of comparative advantages, India's exports to the US have grown significantly in many sectors," the minister further added. Goyal also asserted, "This framework agreement, which will drive global growth and innovation in the coming years, is in the wider interest of the people of India and will greatly benefit the country. It empowers both "Viksit Bharat" and "Atmanirbhar Bharat" (Self-reliant India). We will continue to work tirelessly to realise the Prime Minister's vision," as per ANI.  Tariff slashed down to 18 per cent The Trump administration had imposed tariffs on countries that were major exporters to the US, including India and China. There was a 50 per cent tariff on goods from India entering the United States from August 2025. The tariffs have now been reduced to 18 per cent following the leaders' phone call this week. The BTA, formally proposed in February 2025 following directives from the leadership of both nations, seeks to more than double bilateral trade, from the current USD 191 billion to USD 500 billion by 2030. NCP merger talks on cards? Ajit Pawar’s sons meet Sharad Pawar in Baramati

A closed-door meeting between Nationalist Congress Party (SP) chief Sharad Pawar and the sons of late Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister (CM) Ajit Pawar — Parth and Jay— was held in Baramati on Wednesday, PTI sources said. The meeting took place at Vidya Pratishthan, an educational institute in the Pawar family’s hometown of Baramati, and lasted around one-and-a-half hours. There was no official word on the agenda, though PTI sources indicated the discussions may have focused on the possible merger of the two NCP factions and the upcoming zilla parishad elections in Maharashtra. Ajit Pawar died in a plane crash in Baramati on January 28. Three days later, his wife Sunetra took oath as Maharashtra Deputy CM. Following Ajit Pawar’s death, Sharad Pawar and other party leaders said merger talks between the two NCP factions were in advanced stages, with the late deputy CM reportedly having finalised February 12 as the date to announce reunification. CM Devendra Fadnavis, however, raised questions over the merger claims, saying that had talks been underway, Ajit Pawar would have shared the details with him. Meanwhile, Ajit Pawar’s cousin, Shreejit, recalled his last conversation with the late deputy CM. Dada said we will move forward together with everyone: Ajit Pawar's cousin  “I texted Dada (Ajit Pawar) at 8:30 am to talk about the elections. He said we will take people of all religions and castes together… At 8:37 am, he called me and said that we will move forward together with everyone,” Shreejit told ANI. The crash that claimed Ajit Pawar’s life also killed his personal security officer, a flight attendant, and two pilots. Meanwhile, expressing support for Sunetra, Sharad Pawar said, “I am happy that Sunetra Pawar is sworn in as Deputy CM. Merger discussions were held between Ajit Pawar and Jayant Patil. CM Fadnavis was not involved in the talks. What right did he have to comment on it?” He added, “At present, our entire focus is on taking care of everyone and moving forward together with those who are grieving. As of now, there is no discussion at all about any political decisions.” (With PTI and ANI inputs)

Three Ghaziabad sisters die by suicide; cops suspect online game addiction

In a tragic incident, three minor sisters allegedly died by suicide in their flat in Ghaziabad early on Wednesday. Police said the girls had been spending long hours on mobile phones and an online Korean game, and are investigating whether this contributed to the incident, news agency PTI reported. Assistant Commissioner of Police (Shalimar Garden) Atul Kumar Singh said preliminary investigations suggested that the sisters were hooked on a Korean task-based interactive “love game”, and their parents had raised concerns about excessive phone use in recent days. PTI, quoting Deputy Commissioner of Police Nimish Patil, said the girls were influenced by Korean online content and spent long hours on their phones. “Family members had restricted their mobile phone usage for the past few days, which left them distressed and may have contributed to this tragic incident,” he said. Police received information about the incident around 2.15 am. The three sisters lived within the Teela Mor police station limits, in the Sahibabad area. On reaching the scene, police found the girls – aged 16, 14, and 12 – injured. They were rushed to a hospital in Loni, where doctors declared them dead on arrival, PTI reported. According to Singh, the sisters became involved in online gaming during the Covid-19 pandemic and had been continuously playing the Korean game, mostly together. “The three did everything together – from bathing, eating, and sleeping to going to school,” he said. Patil added that the girls’ education had been irregular, and they had not attended school for the past two years. Their academic performance had also been unsatisfactory earlier. He said it was not yet clear when the mobile phone and gaming habits began, and the investigation is still at an early stage. “It is evident, however, that the girls were highly engaged in mobile phone usage,” he noted. Police said the family had five children – four daughters and a son – and that the father had married twice. All family members lived together. The incident occurred late at night after other family members had gone to sleep, officials said. During the probe, police recovered a diary from the girls’ stationery containing material related to the incident. A note inside read: “Read everything written in this diary, it is all here,” accompanied by a crying-face emoji and a handwritten message saying, “Sorry papa, I am really sorry.” Police said the exact circumstances that led to the deaths are under investigation, and statements of family members are being recorded. Tamil Nadu likely to witness fog, light rain and mild chill in the next few days

Residents across Tamil Nadu can expect a mix of mild winter chill, patchy fog, and isolated rainfall over the next couple of days, according to the latest advisory issued by the Regional Meteorological Centre.  The weather department has forecast moderate early-morning fog in several western and north-western districts, particularly in the hilly and interior regions. Districts including Nilgiris, Salem, Krishnagiri, Dharmapuri, Tirupathur, Vellore and Ranipet are likely to wake up to misty conditions during the pre-dawn and early hours. Reduced visibility may affect commuters and motorists on highways and ghat roads, prompting authorities to advise caution during morning travel. In contrast to the foggy conditions in the western belt, parts of southern Tamil Nadu and the fertile delta districts are expected to receive light rainfall on Thursday. The meteorological centre has predicted scattered, light showers at one or two places across these regions. Karaikal and adjoining coastal areas may also witness brief spells of rain. Though the rainfall is not expected to be intense, it could provide temporary relief from the prevailing dry weather and benefit standing crops in agricultural belts. Elsewhere in Tamil Nadu and the Union Territory of Puducherry, dry weather conditions are expected to persist. Skies are likely to remain largely clear to partly cloudy, with no significant precipitation forecast for most interior and northern regions. Meanwhile, temperatures across interior Tamil Nadu are projected to rise slightly in the coming days. Weather officials have indicated that maximum temperatures may remain above normal the day after Thursday, especially in inland districts. The warmer daytime conditions could contrast with the cooler mornings caused by fog and cloud cover, creating noticeable fluctuations in temperature. Chennai, the State capital, is expected to experience partly cloudy skies. While no major rainfall has been forecast for the city, residents can anticipate relatively pleasant weather, with moderate daytime warmth and comfortable evenings. Overall, the state is set to experience varied weather patterns ranging from foggy mornings in the hills to light showers in the south, while most regions remain dry. Authorities recommend that travellers, farmers and the general public stay updated with local forecasts and take necessary precautions. SIR row: West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee in Supreme Court against EC

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday reached the Supreme Court of India. She will be present in the court for a crucial hearing on the petitions challenging the Election Commission's ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in the state. The Chief Minister had earlier also moved an interlocutory application seeking permission to appear and argue in person, as reported by news agency PTI.  As per PTI, Mamata Banerjee is personally present in courtroom along with her lawyers. The news agency also reported that a gate pass was issued in the Chief Minister's name on Tuesday. As per the Supreme Court’s website, a bench comprising Chief Justice Surya Kant and Justices Joymalya Bagchi and Vipul M Pancholi is scheduled to hear the petitions of Banerjee and three others filed by Mostari Banu and TMC MPs Derek O'Brien and Dola Sen.  Mamata left the residence of Trinamool Congress MP Abhishek Banerjee in New Delhi earlier today as she headed to the Supreme Court ahead of the hearing. Additionally, heavy security was deployed at the Supreme Court ahead of the hearing on the SIR row.  Earlier on Monday, Mamata Banerjee, along with Trinamool Congress (TMC) National General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee, party MP Kalyan Banerjee, and others, had also met Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar in New Delhi. PTI sources said that despite the polite posture of the Chief Election Commissioner and the two Election Commissioners, the Trinamool Congress leader "raised false allegations, misbehaved, thumped the table and left". "The CEC responded to her queries and explained that the rule of law shall prevail and anybody taking the law into their own hands shall be dealt with strictly as per the provisions of law and powers vested in the Commission." The SIR row The Supreme Court earlier had also directed the Election Commission of India to publish the names of voters categorised under the "Logical Discrepancy" list during the Special Intensive Revision of voter rolls in Tamil Nadu, as per PTI.  A bench led by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant issued the directions while hearing a batch of petitions challenging the SIR process in Tamil Nadu on grounds of procedural irregularities. The Court said that the names must be displayed at gram panchayat bhawans, taluka offices in every subdivision, and ward offices in urban areas. Those whose names appear on the list may submit documents within 10 days from the date of display, either personally or through authorised representatives. (With inputs from PTI)

Srinagar sees marginal rise; Gulmarg freezes at minus 8 degree Celcius

The minimum temperature in Jammu and Kashmir's Srinagar city improved marginally on Wednesday, as the Meteorological Department forecast generally dry weather until Friday evening.  Srinagar city recorded a minimum temperature of 3 degrees Celsius, Gulmarg ski resort minus 8 degrees Celsius, and Pahalgam minus 5.6 degrees. Jammu city recorded a minimum temperature of 8.3 degrees Celsius, Katra town 7.5 degrees Celsius, Batote 1.6 degrees Celsius, Banihal minus 1.1 degrees Celsius and Bhaderwah minus 2 degrees Celsius. The Meteorological Department has forecast generally dry weather till Friday evening with partly cloudy sky. On February 7, light snow is likely to occur at isolated places on the higher reaches. On February 8, the weather office has forecast generally dry weather, and light rain/snow on February 9 and 10. Since the 40-day-long harsh winter cold period, 'Chillai Kalan', ended on January 30, there is overall improvement in minimum and maximum temperature, although there is very little chance of fresh snowfall in the plains of the Valley during the remaining part of this winter. Thankfully, appreciable heavy snowfall occurred towards the end of January, and that is likely to sustain various water bodies, including rivers, streams, springs and lakes during the coming hot summer months. Despite the minimum temperature dropping as low as minus 6 degrees during the Chillai Kalan, inter-district road connectivity remained unaffected in the Valley. Traffic on the Srinagar-Jammu National Highway and the train service between Katra in Reasi district and Srinagar city continued uninterrupted except for two days' break on the highway and a day's suspension of the train service. A large number of domestic tourists are visiting the Valley these days, and most hotels in Srinagar, Gulmarg, Sonamarg and Pahalgam have good occupancy these days. People from the tourism industry are seeing it as a very positive sign. This story has been sourced from a third party syndicated feed, agencies. ‘It will be a historic Budget,’ says Union Minister Kiren Rijiju

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah arrived in Parliament to attend the Budget session on Sunday. Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju also arrived at the Parliament to attend the Cabinet meeting just before the presentation of Union Budget 2026-27 by Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman. Speaking to ANI, Rijiju said, "It will be a historic budget. The PM's 'Reform Express' will move forward speedily towards Viksit Bharat." Union Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan said this would be, "Viksit aur Aatmanirbhar Bharat ka Budget." The Union Cabinet, headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, will approve the Union Budget 2026-27 in Parliament. Earlier, Sitharaman arrived at the Parliament to attend the Cabinet meeting ahead of presenting the Budget 2026-27 in Lok Sabha. Meanwhile, President Droupadi Murmu offered 'dahi-cheeni' (curd and sugar) to Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman when she arrived at the Rashtrapati Bhavan. The 'dahi-cheeni' ritual is carried out by the President as it is considered an auspicious commencement of the day. This customary good-luck gesture was made during the Finance Minister's meeting with President Murmu at Rashtrapti Bhavan. Minister of State for Finance Pankaj Chaudhary was also present on the occasion. The Finance Minister was seen discussing the contours of the Budget proposals with the President. Ahead of her arrival at Rashtrapati Bhavan, Sitharaman was seen carrying her trademark 'bahi-khata', a tablet wrapped in a red-coloured cloth bearing a golden-coloured national emblem on it. MoS Pankaj Chaudhary, Chief Economic Advisor Dr V Anantha Nageswaran, Chairman of the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) Ravi Agrawal and other officials of the Finance Ministry were seen accompanying the Finance Minister. Sitharaman is set to present her ninth consecutive Union Budget today at 11 am in the Lok Sabha, which will see her equal former Finance Minister P Chidambaram's record and surpass that of Pranab Mukherjee. Former Prime Minister Morarji Desai continues to hold the record for presenting 10 term the most Union Budgets in independent India. Sitharaman will present a statement of the estimated receipts and expenditure of the Government of India for the year 2026-27. The Finance Minister will also lay on the table two statements under Section 3(1) of the Fiscal Responsibility and Budget Management (FRBM) Act, 2003. These include the Medium-term Fiscal Policy-cum-Fiscal Policy Strategy Statement and the Macro-economic Framework Statement. The List of Business further states that Sitharaman will move for leave to introduce the Finance Bill, 2026, in the Lok Sabha. She will also formally introduce the Bill. The Finance Bill gives legal effect to the financial proposals of the government.FM Sitharaman is set to present India's ninth consecutive Union Budget. On Thursday, Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman tabled the Economic Survey of India in Parliament for the financial year 2025-26. The tabling of the Economic Survey ahead of the Budget follows the long-standing tradition of outlining the state of the economy before detailing future fiscal plans. The Economic Survey of India is regarded as the nation's official annual "report card" on the economy. It provides a comprehensive, data-backed review of the economy's performance over the previous year and offers a broad roadmap for future policy direction. As the government's flagship annual report, it reviews key economic developments over the past 12 months. The survey plays a crucial role in the lead-up to the Union Budget. While the Budget focuses on future government spending, taxation, and policy measures, the Economic Survey explains why those decisions are necessary by analysing past economic performance and trends. The Economic Survey is prepared by the Economic Division of the Department of Economic Affairs under the leadership of the Chief Economic Adviser (CEA). It is presented in two parts, each focusing on different aspects of the economy. The Budget session will span 30 sittings over 65 days, concluding on April 2. The two Houses will adjourn for a recess on February 13 and reconvene on March 9 to enable the Standing Committees to examine the Demands for Grants of various ministries and departments.
