BMC gives Ganesh mandals 3 days to fix roads, footpaths

Days after the city bid adieu to Ganesha on Saturday, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) swung into action and asked all the Ganesh mandals to repair roads and footpaths they dug to erect pandals and hoardings during the festival.

The civic officials said action would be initiated against mandals that fail to do the needful in the next three days.

They also said notices will be issued to offenders and their deposits with the BMC will be used to carry out repair works.

“If the BMC spends more on repair works, the expenditure will be recovered from the mandals' deposit for next year’s festival,” Additional Municipal Commissioner Aseem Gupta said.

Officials said though it was the responsibility of the mandals to repair roads and footpaths, it was observed that most of them were least interested in doing so.

The Fort Vibhag Sarvajanik Ganeshostav Mandal (FVSGM) welcomed the move.

“Every mandal should restore roads and footpaths to their original state, if they have dug them for Ganpati festival. We fill all the pits created by our mandal every year,” said Mandal Secretary Rupesh Surve.

Sarvajanik Ganeshotsav Samanvay Samiti (SGSS), the umbrella body of all Ganesh mandals in the city, hailed the BMC’s decision of seizing deposits.

“If mandals are at fault, then they should pay for it,” SGSS President Naresh Dahibawkar said.u00a0
