Bharati Urs, daughter of erstwhile Karnataka Chief Minister D Devraj Urs, surrendered before the High Court yesterday, following a non-bailable warrant issued against her in connection with the murder of her cousin and advocate Chitralekha Urs.

On August 3, the court had ordered issue of notices to the State government, prime accused Bharati, and two others in the murder case.

Chitralekha Urs, daughter of former Karnataka High Court judge MP Chandrakantaraje Urs, was abducted from a palmgrove nursery on January 19, 2004 and was murdered by strangulation. The High Court had issued a non-bailable warrant against Bharati Urs, daughter of erstwhile Karnataka Chief Minister D Devraj Urs, in connection with the murder. Chitralekha was also Bharati's cousin and an advocate.

On May 27, a fast-track sessions court acquitted Bharati Urs and others of abducting Chitralekha, daughter of former Karnataka High Court judge MP Chandrakantaraje Urs, from a palmgrove nursery on January 19, 2004 and murdering her by strangulation. Chitralekha's decomposed body was found in Shiradi Ghat on March 9, 2004.

Bharati, who appeared before the HC was asked to furnish a personal bond of Rs 1 lakh and another surety of Rs 1 lakh within ten days.

The court later recalled the non-bailable warrant issued against her with an instruction that she will be bound by the condition until the completion of the appeal pending against her.

The next hearing of the case will be on September 9.
