Sudanese student slain in German Bakery blast had been dealing with police harassment, say friends
Just two weeks prior to his death, 21-year-old Anas Al Fateh had won a football championship in the city. The same night, he was even made to visit a police lock-up.
A bright and chirpy student, Anas had been worried about harassment and ill-treatment of foreign students by the police just two weeks before his death, alleged his friends. Known as a 'master-striker' by his friends for his record goal against Iran in a championship last year, Anas was a first year BSc student at Poona College.
Originally from Khartoum, Sudan's capital, at present, his family is settled in Doha, where he did his schooling.
While waiting for his body to be released from the post-mortem centre at Sassoon hospital, Anas' friend Ibrahim Hashim recalled an instance in the past one month that indicated the deceased was upset due to the harassment of foreign students by the police.
"Two weeks ago, Anas' team won the football tournament organised by Symbiosis for international students. That day, 15 to 20 of his friends went out to Kondhwa on bikes, holding the cup and the Sudanese flag. They were celebrating the victory but they were picked up by the police," alleged Hashim.
He added that the police had even put Anas' closest friend Amjad Elgazoli (25) behind bars on charges of illegal assembly. The police allegedly refused to release him until a bribe was paid.
Anas was an office-bearer ofu00a0 an organisation formed for Sudanese students' welfare, but reportedly resigned due to police pressure.
