Distressed with an ailment that plagued him for two years, a 45-year-old man committed suicide by strangling himself with a towel in the verandah of JJ Hospital on Sunday. Shyam Narayan Vishwakarma, resident of Mankhurd was undergoing treatment for a severe skin ailment, pemphigus vulagaris (blistering and sores on the skin), with diabetes, and was admitted to the hospital since March 30.

“A case of accidental death has been registered. The deceased was irritated with his medical complication and thus committed suicide,” said Kalyan Fulari, PSI at JJ Marg police station. According to doctors at the hospital, Vishwakarma was upset over his illness. From the past two years, he was undergoing treatment but could not find relief.

Hospital staffers stated that he was looking disturbed since the day he was admitted to the hospital. “He had been suffering from Pemphigus for the last two years. He had no psychiatric problems. Early on Sunday morning, he had got up to use the bathroom. But after some time when he didn’t return, the ward boys started searching for him, and at around 4.15 am they found him,” said Dr T P Lahane, dean, JJ Hospital.u00a0
