UK man weighing 300 kg undergoes obesity surgery in city

Until a few days ago, life for UK-based Zachari Andrew Smith (30) was restricted to the bed. Weighing almost 300 kg, Smith was unable to move around which meant he had no job, and no social life.

He used to suffer from heaviness in the abdomen, severe backache and hypertension, sleep apnoea and walking problems because of his obese condition. However, last week, Smith reached the city for a bariatric surgery (see box) at Ruby Hall Clinic.

Dr Shashank Shah with his team did a 45-minute surgery last Thursday. Almost five days after the surgery, Smith was able to walk a bit. According to Dr Shah in the next one and a half years, Smith will be able to lose almost 150 kg.

Dr Shah said, "It was a very risky surgery because the patient was almost 300 kg. We required 20 people to coordinate and an extra long instrument.

We had to order two tables, as he was four-and-a-half feet horizontally. His BMI (Body Mass Index) was 80. The instrument had to be bent to move it inside."

The team is satisfied because within three days, Smith had shed 8 kg.

Elaborating on his obese condition, Smith said: "As a child I was cheerful, friendly and a happy-go-lucky kind of a person. But the last 10 years of my life had been disastrous as I was mentally disturbed and had stopped socialising. One of the hurdles I faced in my profession was that I was unable to get insurance because of my weight problem and could not resist food."

Dr Shah said after the surgery he would be able to control hunger and all excess fat would be converted into energy.

Before the operation a special drill of doctors was conducted, where four anaesthetics (while normally only one anaesthetic is required) were used.

Dr Shah said Smith wanted to get on with his career, get married and have kids. "He wanted to lead a normal life, which will be possible after one and a half years. He will be around 110 kg then.

The surgery

Bariatric surgery, or weight loss surgery, is a type of procedure performed on people who are obese, for the purpose of losing weight. This weight loss is usually achieved by reducing the size of the stomach with an implanted medical device (gastric banding) or through removal of a portion of the stomach.
